Having a degree will affect your chances. All other things equal, if it ends up on a company choosing between you, and another candidate that is 100% exactly the same as you but has a degree, the degree will be picked

But it doesn't affect them a lot

It's not a matter of size, it's a matter of company culture. You could have a 5 people operation that thinks degrees are paramount, or multi-billion worth companies that think it doesn't matter

    Or the opposite

Most companies, across size/other factors don't care overmuch.

Industry can matter. If the job requires low level stuff, they generally tend to want more someone with a proper CS background

For wrangling together APIs, a CS degree is completely irrelevant

95% of code is wrangling together APIs (completely made-up stat)

cause in most job applications i see they mostly ask "job experience"

Yes, it wouldn't really matter in most cases

But let's say, specially when you start, a degree can help get a foot in

Between 0 experience + 3 years of CS and 0 experience, the 3 years of CS is preferrable

Once you have some experience, degree matters less and less

Not to encourage you to not get a degree, because I'm old and back then the landscape was pretty different, but in 20 years of professional life no one even asked me if I had a degree

Not a single time did anyone even hint in the general direction of the question

And I've been hired as a tech lead, a CTO, a tech strategist, main programmer, etc

I was lucky though, because back in the day almost everyone was a hacker and degrees were rare to come by anyway, so I got my experience freelancing with individuals and small businesses

ic...so it sorta depend on the company and the job role your applying for

Yes, but freelancing can give you a leg up. You'll be working for small clients that are willing to take a risk on you in exchange for lower prices or better service

oh yea that brings me a question so lets say im someone who either worked on a lib/framework that is widely used by many devs or someone who made an app or service that had some pretty decent userbase would that be a step up
