Quickie: is Dendron only developer focused/centric note-taking app or is there room for "normal" user ? @kevins8 mentioned here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee-D1Vf5GY4▾

that it is primarily for dev in mind.

as I'm only just starting out with Dendron, it's always time for me to switch to a tool more suited to the fact that I'm not a developer. I was thinking, for example, of Logseq, which is open and free and which already allows a lot of things. What do you think ? I specify that I am absolutely not a developer and that I do not work at all in data processing. So. As sometimes I feel a little lost in front of Dendron (which does a lot of things but which I have trouble using), I tell myself that it is surely linked to the fact that 1) I do not know VSCode well and 2) Dendron is reserved for a certain "elite"

of course in saying this I don't mean to offend anyone and I myself don't feel offended that I don't quite match Dendron's target 😉

in any case, even if I find my Dendron quite ugly, I find it very funny to use

Imho, because of its complexity to setup (compared to other alternatives), Dendron is not suitable for normal or non-geek users. But it also depends on what you want to do with Dendron. As for me, I come to Dendron just because I want something to easily publish a personal wiki on my own custom domain. With Obsidian or Logseq, you can also achieve that but it's not simpler/cheaper than Dendron

I have a tech/IT background but I am not interested anymore 🙂 I hack things here and there but that's not a goal. I agree that maybe Dendron is not for me. It is a niche note-taking app but I like the way it manages my notes and the hierarchy can be really helpful. I am not, at the moment, interested in anything "fancy" but I'd like to use it as a PKM/PIM and day-to-day companion.

then play with Obsidian. You can take quick note from its companion mobile app and sync with your desktop easily. You can also organize notes in hierarchy within Obsidian too

Obsidian is sadly not free software so I won't go for it, never. Plus, I am not interested in a mobile app. I'd rather think at desk, when my mind is plainly operational (and I do not have a smartphone so... 😄 )

I think that dendron is not just for developers, but there are features within it that will be easier for developers to pick up on because they follow similar patterns as tools used by developers (like the idea of refactoring or applying schemas). If this blog post resonates with you, I think that it’s worth spending the time to learn the subset of functionality that makes the tool solve your specific problems https://www.kevinslin.com/notes/e1455752-b052-4212-ac6e-cc054659f2bb/ . You don’t have to use all of the features to benefit from using Dendron.

Not sure if this is a dendron or VSCode specific comments, but there are custom themes for VSCode in the marketplace that might change the styles into something you enjoy more

Not sure I understand the bug, but in cases where a section/file isn’t detected in the lookup bar (sometimes after a big refactor), you can cmd shift p and use the “dendron reload index command”, which usually fixes it.

Can sketch a picture of what you’d be hoping for, it sounds intriguing but I don’t know what the has_collection property does. It sounds like the idea could be to have an alternate rendering mode for back links in general (not just backlinks on tag pages).

Fyi, the wiki in dendron of has_collection property https://wiki.dendron.so/notes/pn7ifmqn73981mwz4rwse3o/ Here is an example of a published page when its markdown note included
    has_collection: true

Ah, I see - so in this mode instead of just listing the links to the tagged pages, it would show title, date, and description for each entry. Thanks for the links 🙂

Sounds like maybe a “display_backlinks_as_collection” property could solve your problem. Reusing the existing prop for tags pages may not work bc you could give a tag page children if you wanted, and those could be displayed as their own collection

For whatever it's worth, I wouldn't consider myself a developer. I am just technical enough to figure out how to use Jekyll, but I really think of myself more as a humanities / education person. But I care about software that respects my privacy and that I can help influence the development of, if only by being in a community with the people who build it. I slightly participated in the Obsidian community before finding Dendron, and mostly just got non-responses to my questions. With Dendron, I feel like I actually have a chance to talk to the builders. Dendron does require that someone is technical enough to be able to install an extension for VS Code, but beyond that, I think it's a question of which patterns someone is willing to take the time to learn. In any case, I hope you find a tool that you feel is worth spending your time and effort to use!

Hello, I just installed Dendron, I added some pages with links, but I don't see the BACKLINKS pane in VS Code, I'm I missing something?

You'll need to open the dendron sidebar rather than the files one and it should be in there?

@rlh1994 thank you, It is so simple yet I didn't find it, probably a good tip to be added to Getting Started

yeah, its not very visible. we're working on focusing the sidebar when you first open the dendron workspace so that this is more apparent

You're right. The proximity with the developers is a real plus and a real blessing. It gives the impression of belonging to a small community but it is also what makes it its greatest fragility: its adoption is still in its very beginnings, leaving doubts hanging over users, like me , who lacks confidence and knowledge to precisely bet on it or not. However, I use it every day with happiness; just, I don't master 1% of the functionalities and concepts 😄

Is there any kind of 'onSave' hook so that I can automatically do things at this exact moment ? Things going from simply comiting to my repo up to publishing remotely or tweet about it (just examples)

not natively but you might want to check out [Run on Save - Visual Studio Marketplace](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=pucelle.run-on-save) (thanks to @rlh1994 for making me aware of it)

Hi. Newbie here. Just reading about Dendron's convention for file-naming https://www.kevinslin.com/notes/3dd58f62-fee5-4f93-b9f1-b0f0f59a9b64/ Any illustrative examples of this outside of programming notes?

I should clarify. What I mean is, having read your blog post (and once briefly having tried out Dendron), I'm really interested by your hierarchical naming system, eg lang.python.operator.md etc - but I'm curious to imagine how it might apply to other concepts beside programming languages.
