Hi folks, is the shortcut which will open dendron to a daily note (for example) even if vscode is not running? Command-shift-I doesn't do it.

Hmm... not sure how you'd use a shortcut even if vscode is not running... are you potentially just asking about not having an editor open (but still in vscode)?

I guess I am trying to avoid the 2-step process, the keyboard shortcut would open vscode and then open a dendron daily note automatically.

Oh gotcha ... have you played around with autohotkey? This is actually an interesting setup ... would like to figure this functionality too 😄

Okay, I'll likely figure this out later today @User (please let me know if you get this working before hand) but doesn't seem too hard to get setup if you use AHK + https://vscode.readthedocs.io/en/latest/editor/command-line/

not a perfect solution, but your workspace will remember the last file that was open before it was closed. so whenever you close vscode, having the daily note (or whatever you want) on your window before closing it will let you open your workspace next time and immediately have the file open there.

you can also just open the file you want directly but this doesn't open your workspace, which dendron requires to function 🤔

wish the vscode cli let you specify the file AND the workspace you want to open. for now it's either the file or the workspace 😄

actually, I think you can do it as two separate commands

code {path-to-workspace-root}/dendron.code-workspace
code -r {path-to-workspace-root}/vault/{name-of-file-you-want-open}

the

-r

arg in the second command will force opening in the last active window, which is opened by the first command.

or we could extend Dendron to offer URI handling for now over vscode https://code.visualstudio.com/api/references/vscode-api#window.registerUriHandler to make it call able that way hmmm

Am I the only one having problems rendering LaTeX in the new dendron version? For example,

$\sum$

is rendered as sum instead of ∑. I have checked and there was no problem in the last version.

So basically, I have one big question, and lots of smaller ones. I'll get the big one out of the way first and leave the smaller ones until a bit later.

A little context about me: I use VS Code all the time, in my day-job and in the evenings when I have some personal writing projects and I use LaTeX and the LaTeX Workshop extension, so it really makes sense for me to also use VS Code for my notes too. I'm currently using Foam, and I am mostly quite happy with it, however I am somewhat in awe of Dendron's development pace, with weekly releases and full-time developers with start-up backing, plus you now have block-linking and transclusion which I would like to make use of. So I'm wondering whether to make the change.

I've read the FAQs and I know they say that you don't need to use hierarchies and schemas, but it does seem to me that Dendron's USP is this "Hierarchy First Approach to Note Taking" and the first sentence of the Wiki is "The hierarchical note taking tool that grows as you do!"

My notes are in a classic Zettelkasten style, following quite closely what is described in Sonke Ahrens's book. And their subject matter is political philosophy/theory, political economy, political history, jurisprudence, constitutional law, with any note cutting across these subject matters in multiple ways. It would be totally impossible to impose a hierarchy on them, and the idea that I could define some sort of schema for them is almost laughable.

If a large part of the development focus is going to be on really making these hierarchies and schemas more and more powerful, am I going to be constantly swimming against the tide by not using them? Should I just accept that Dendron probably isn't for me?

Appreciate the well stated question 🙂 Yes, Dendron does lean towards hierarchy but the caveat is that everything is already a hierarchy in dendron, even if its just a hierarchy of one. for zettelkasten, you can implement using scratch notes which creates a note under the

My Zettelkasten has four folders:

inbox

which is for fleeting notes -- what Dendron calls "scratch notes" and "daily notes";

permanent

which is for permanent notes;

reference

for literature notes, with a subdirectory

_people

which has biographical notes on famous individuals; and

projects

which contains subfolders for each project.

In the Dendron way of doing things, would those top-level folders be separate vaults? Or would you instead use the hierarchy, so files names

inbox.daily.*.md

,

inbox.scratch.*.md

,

permanent.*.md

,

reference.*.md

,

reference.person.*.md

, and then perhaps just vaults for individual projects (as they come and go in a way the rest don't)?

You could have a mixture of multiple vaults and the corresponding Hierarchies, nothing limits you too have one Hierarchy only in one vault.

My vaults are 100% public as I publish them online, but I've seen people have two vaults. One for personal private stuff, one for public stuff. Could also be a work / non-work division. I don't have too many notes personally so a single vault has been sufficient for my use. But once a certain hierarchy becomes it's own living thing I may consider pruning that out to a dedicated vault.

adding on to what @User and @User have set - unless you need to, you should just keep everything in one vault. top llevel folders can be top level nodes (

eg. daily.*, scratch.*, permanent.*, etc

Yes. I started out with absolutely no structure because trying to fit how I think to was always keeping me demotivated. I let my note just chaotically occur and when it did make sense, the refactoring feature let me do it without any friction. I still refactor all the time. I purposefully dismissed zettelkasten at the beginning but slowly my vault is becoming one (I think) so I may sit down one day and really go through what it's all about :smile:
