I have some older hardware based on an AMD Ryzen 1700 with 64GB RAM, a couple of SSDs for VMs and some HDDs for additional storage. You should be able to run W11 in a VM, I have multiple W11 VMs running on Hyper-V in my lab, no problems at all. They are deployed via MDT.

PowerEdge R630 with 2 CPU and 40 cores each. 256GB of Ram 3TB SSD Running AHV on that guy for Citrix testing ect 2 10gb NIC tied into 12 port NetGear 10gb switch 1 E300-8D SuperMicro 128GB of Ram 1 CPU with 8cores 1TB NVMe 1TB HDD VMware- Cluster LAB 2 SFP+ tied into 12 port NETGEAR 10gb 1 - A1SRi-2758F 1 CPU with 8 cores (Atom CPU) 32GB or Ram 1 TB SSD 1TB HDD VMware VMware- Cluster LAB 4 1Gbps LAG/LACP tied into a older NETGEAR switch. Old PC with a i7 running hyper V that houses my NFC for Veaam to backup everything. 1 Annoyed Wife because I keep spending money on my lab LOL. All my Citrix Infrastructure related runs on the PowerEdge. My VDI/XA stuff runs on the E300 The A1SRi-2758F is so I can move vcenter around without powering it off.

I can even do vTPM into my W11 VMs, to enable all the security features
r
AMD are awesome, but they don't work well with Netscaler VPX.
k
True, there have been issues, but if I remember correctly, ADC 13.1 added support for AMD CPUs.

damn ray...you got quiet the setup
r
You can get such cheap Dell's on ebay these days.. R720/R730/etc.
r
I have a similar setup to Ray.
r
Oh, I did not know that. I can build a AMD monster PC=Server way cheaper. @newbie1998 yea man It took me about a year or so. I buy a little bit at a time, as my wife is like what are you buying now. Oh I have UPS for each Server so when I lose power, which I do when the dang wind blows I have about 30 minutes to shut things down if needed.
@Leee Jeffries helped me big time
I want another powedge for the Nutanix AHV part. But I will have to wait a bit. The 10GB switch was 500ish this month with all the Nic add ones lol
n
@Kasper Johansen so since i don't have hyper-v installed on my laptop can i just use virtual pc instead. do you think that will allow me to create a windows 11 vm?
r
I am always on EBAY. Like a addict looking for gold nuggets.
n
i can't get any servers b/c i live in apartment and don't have room.
ah, understood. Just saying there's a TON of cheap gear on there
r
SuperMicro e-300-9d is small little monster
Oh wow, that is super cheap.
k
@newbie1998 I think as long as W11 is virtualized the strict hardware demands are ignored, at least that's what I see in Hyper-V and VMware
n
so vmware workstation would not let me create windows 11
r
I keep attempting to put my CC in azure, but I am scared haha
Intersting, I was running w11 on my AHV node with no vTPM. But that was before it was GA
Stack that sucker side ways in a closet. They have some crazy side mounts for tight spots. That poweredge 720 is nice.
k
@newbie1998 which OS do you have on that Xeon laptop?
n
Windows 10 22H2
k
You can enable Hyper-V in Windows 10 🙂
r
I can lease out my lab for you if needed. I am cheaper than azure 🙂 haha

n
lol
k
No need for Vmware Workstation etc.
n
i wonder if it will work if i upgrade my vmware workstation
or should i just use virtual pc
d
I use an Asrock X470D4U board with an AMD Ryzen CPU, 32 GB RAM, NVME and HDD. Very cheap, but powerful and the board has IPMI. Hypervisor is Proxmox, very stable and fast.

You can bypass the Windows 11 Installer hardware check. I've done this several times to create Win 11 VMs. https://www.theverge.com/22715331/how-to-install-windows-11-unsupported-cpu-intel-amd-registry-regedit

thanks! I'll try that
j
I've got some serious KW/h envy going on. stares at California energy costs

I use Intel NUCs 10s as the base for my lab. The 6 core i7 version if you can find them cheap are good for using for HyperV/ESX while having nice low power usage. Can't be spec'd as high as a second hand server, but bonus is they are quiet when running with just their 1 fan so can just sit on a shelf in the spare bedroom not bothering the wife.
