I believe you can do packer/terraform with vsphere and if you just do stand-alone it’s free

Nutanix CE with PC should enable the Nutanix based packer solution

Windows 10 Hyper-V

@James Rankin so I take it you install full win 10 on the host and take it from there?
@Benjamin Crill Would have limitations though? think max 16 GB ram so I would lose out…
l
Packer for XenServer. https://github.com/xenserver/packer-plugin-xenserver You can pretty much use whatever you like. Hyper-V is the simplest solution as you can run it all locally, Nutanix CE is great but you are limited on resources.
Sorry, use this link instead, more up to date. https://github.com/ddelnano/packer-plugin-xenserver

I saw this before but no indication that is support Windows builds... all I could find were Linux based builders
j
I have a Windows 10 box for my lab with client side Hyper-V and Packer builds work great (unless you want Windows 11)

any probs with win11? I have win 11 on my laptop with Hyper-V... maybe I can test it there before changing my hypervisor on my physical host/server

I can't get Windows 11 VMs to build on Hyper-V in Packer because there appears to be no support for the TPM switch
Haven't tried the Hyper-V for Windows 11 but assume it would be exactly the same
πŸ‘πŸ» 1
(as in it works great unless you want Win11 guests)
a
Gotcha
j
You can still build Win11 guests, just not through Packer currently (although it may have been fixed and I haven't noticed)
Happy to share some HCL files for Win10 or Server OSes if you want (although mine are all mostly stolen from GitHub anyway)
a
Yes please - anything to get me started would be great - cheers🍺
want to do a chocolatey server too...
j
I have a Chocolatey server - man that was a mission to set up
IIS is what I run it on
a
So I thought.... wanted to do winget initially but it doesn't come native on server OS so I wanted something more cross-platform hence Choco...
j
WinGet is a bit crap
πŸ’― 1
I really should write a blog post on creating the Chocolatey server
πŸ’― 3
Might do it over the weekend

yeah it's a work in progress..

i've got some primers on Packer on my blog, based on vSphere , but if you want an explanation on how to use scripts to further automate post build stuff , you may find my posts useful https://getvpro.wordpress.com/2022/02/10/windows-build-automation-w-packer-powershell-2022-redux/

I use vCenter / ESXi. I pay $200 a year for the VMUG program. Not free, but I consider it a career investment
