azure is weird, it’s the only one that can do a single IP config
look at the port address translation bit
j
Thanks, I saw that and will review again. This one is weird it has multiple NICs and IPs. I know it was deployed from the HA template.
c
You definitely do not want to do a single IP config. It's a hacky workaround from the days where Azure wouldn't give anyone multiple addresses.
j
Ah
So it doesn’t seem to be setup for single IP. But the ALB doesn’t seem to be passing traffic (or the NS is ignoring it).
m
I never had luck with HA in either Azure or AWS
you’re nearly always better off not doing it and doing GSLB
j
GSLB in the same region?
m
why do you need HA in the same region?
if something goes down it’s going to be the whole region generally
j
I was told that during maintenance it could go down.
c
yeah honestly in cloud providers I generally push to instead look at independent instances and distribute traffic using GSLB or the analogous cloud function. when doing maintenance you just disable the GSLB service/etc and let it drain
j
It’s an Active/Passive between the two regions right now. So maybe that’s why it was suggested that way.
m
HA can’t span an AZ, so if your AZ goes down for maintenance what does HA get you?
unless that changed recently
j
I’d have to confirm, it looked like it could be done.
Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!
The funny part is this was setup by Citrix initially, but it’s not working.
m
I might be thinking of AWS where it couldn’t span zones because of the way it did failover with elastic network cards and not floating IPs
I still firmly believe you’re better off with GSLB due to the huge amount of time a failover can take, but understand that some people balk at the cost
c
HA can span zones in AWS and Azure now. AWS migrates EIPs using ip sets, Azure still relies on a frontend ALB
m
good to know, cheers

Went through this recently. Azure can do multi nic, multi ip now via the HA template config but it still relies on the alb to route the traffic. Gateway vips are the alb front end ip as you say. Citrix docs are terrible on it. This one is pretty good - https://vzerotohero.com/2018/06/deploying-netscaler-ha-template-on-microsoft-azure-ultimate-guide/. Steps through the different setups and runs through the deployment of the method you are talking about.

@Cormac Long Thank you! That answered my question. Still having an issue, but think it’s something in Azure vs the ADC.
