Why not build HA in Azure? Smoother updates and not a single point of failure. First time is a little bit confusing specially when going through eDocs. We build a HA configuration for a client and its working very reliable.

Single Instance has different SLAs depending on the selected data disk type: • Premium SSD: 99,9% (Downtime: daily:1m 26s; weekly:10m4s; monthly: 43m 49s; yearly: 8h 45m 56s) • Standard SSD: 99,5% (Downtime: daily: 7m 12s; weekly:50m24s; monthly:3h 39m 8s yearly: 1d 19h 49m 44s) • Standard HDD: 95% (Downtime: daily:1h 12m; weekly:8h 24m; monthly: 1d 12h 31m 27s; yearly: 18d 6h 17m 27s) Please note these SLA failure values. Another point is that when you upgrade ADC and restart the appliance, all connected users will be disconnected.

One thing we noticed: The HDX session reconnect time when initiating a fail-over is taking up to 15 seconds when running your ADC in Azure. @Daniel Weppeler please correct me if I am talking nonsense 🤓

Due to a few reasons we didn't do HA. We are using Azure Traffic Manager in front of our ADCs instead. No failover but we've seen teh ADC instance reboot fast enough that users never get disconnected
m
What does HA actually get you though? Back when I looked at it you couldn’t span AZs with HA, and given the failover takes forever you’re not really helping users out during updates either.
j
Well what about the synchronization of the configuration? 🙂 It’s official supported to build HA on Azure but you need to work with INC mode. Otherwise it is technically not possible.
b
ADM and automate the configuration
m
just use GSLB
is it really likely that a single netscaler instance is going to be the only thing that goes down in your AZ?
j
@Benjamin Crill great if you have the right People on Board. It’s not fitting for most of our clients. @mike: if you just have a standard license and dont have budget you will not be able to use GSLB -> Enterprise Feature. But I like the idea 😉
m
if you have a small budget, don’t waste it on active/passive HA 😛

two things, ADM will help with the automation and deploying configs consistently. And if you don't have Enterprise edition and we are talking Azure, Traffic Manager can do GSLB instead
c
as much as sales reps might hate it, in public clouds I generally suggest going with GSLB backed standalone instances instead of HA pairs. It is, however, critical that you understand what you're using ADC for as to whether HA is worth the extra overhead of mixing in external LB/etc to work around public cloud design limitations.

Thanks for the replies. Glad I am not the only one who feels that HA in Azure is not a must-have under the right circumstances/requirements.
