oh damn i had no idea there was anything but Teams / skype that had Citrix optimizations ! i'll have to check that out
I asked out UC guy about it, but who knows. We've gotten recent complaints about audio/video quality in Citrix Desktop, all from god damn Mac users.
I'm just hoping that somebody else has gone through this routine before and can point me in the right direction. Our UC guy isn't a Citrix guy.
And to be clear, we aren't looking to actually install the Jabber softphone in the image.
m
Mac doesn’t have a JVDI client, so you’re out of luck there
n
lolol, JFC
m
and by default it fails completely if it can’t find it
n
The JVDI client in general (on a Windows machine)?
m
it’s a shitshow getting it to work properly, you need to change your XML config in the webex admin portal to allow failback if it can’t find the jvdi client
I haven’t had the time to test it properly, but I finally got made a webex admin so it’s on the list
n
Because that was one of the things I was going to test. If an endpoint doesn't have the client installed, will the a/v still work, just not optimized? And no warnings
m
no, it doesn’t work at all by default
which is an awful default setting
n
So it's more than just installing the agent in Citrix and client on the endpoint. Which means I bet there's some config required on the back end of Cisco.
m
yeah, let me see if I can find the xml config page again
you need to set <EnableVDIFallback>true</EnableVDIFallback> in the defaultorg xml
n
And that's a setting on the back end? Nothing I can change on the client side
m
nope 😞
n
Sweet. The fact that there's no Mac client is already a nail in the coffin, IMO.
I hate Teams, but all of this bullshit would be resolved if we'd just pick a service (Teams) and go with it already.
m
we have the exact same issue, Teams, Webex, Jabber and now Zoom
n
Teams, Webex, Skype, Jabber, and BlueJeans here. Like a bag of M&Ms where you only get the brown ones, which we all know are the worst.
n
Appreciate the link - gonna keep this one for when our UC guy gets back to me.
m
I think the newest version of webex might work without all the silly settings now, but VDI jabber failed hard and I had to roll it back
it seems to work well enough without the VDI bits
n
m
If you ONLY had thin clients I could see the appeal
yeah, cisco support will tell you there is still a special VDI version you have to use if you open a support case using that
even though it says right there it’s the same code base now
n
What's this supposed to be paired with, though? Cisco Webex Meetings for VDI 39.3.0?
m
oh, it still has an agent plugin, for thin clients only
who knows? the documentation for this is literally all over the plac
n
Yep, hence this post, lol.
m
some of it in that XML settings doc
the biggest problem is this is only designed around windows thin clients and you need to be a site admin to download the thin client plugin
so it basically useless for anyone else
n
I take it back, the download on https://www.webex.com/content/webex/c/en_US/index/downloads.html/ is v40.4.10.8
So that VDI plugin I just linked would be paired with that client, I guess.
m
yeah, if you can even get it to detect it
n
I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
m
I couldn’t make it work through a netscaler gateway, didn’t bother to try locally because nobody is in the office
n
Cisco's documentation on this VDI plugin make it sound like it's solely for thin client endpoints.
Endpoint and thin client are apparently interchangeable terms for them, because they have both listed in their hardware tested.
Lovely, that Webex VDI plugin requires Receiver/CWA to be present and installed before it'll work. I could fool it by precreating the key, but I bet that'd somehow break it.
v
n
I did see Rory’s article, but it looks like he’s actually installing the Jabber client.
t
did you try Browser Content Redirection for Webex ? That works fine (if proxy is not configured/used)
n
No, but looking at the documentation, losing the ability to share content is a deal breaker alone.
m
yeah, I’m not sure any of these “VDI optimizations” really do much for functionality. Teams loses the screen share ability if you don’t start a call first and crazy stuff like that too
a
that screen share limitation and no gallery view in that mode is whats gonna be a big issue for us since both are just about the most highly used features right now
n
Just went through testing Skype, BlueJeans and Webex. The first two were great on Windows devices, but we had weird issues with BlueJeans and Mac with USB headsets. Webex, as expected, was a total dumpster fire in every possible way.
a
Bluejeans has citrix optimizations now too?
n
I think it's just in Preview right now, but yes. It definitely helps, too,
a
nice! do all these optimizations work on the same principal using webrtc and need both a client and server component like teams or does say bluejeans just need an updated vda client? i know i can just look this up on my own too
n
Yep, it requires an endpoint installation just like HDX RTOP - and there's no Mac client (to my knowledge).
a
i'd imagine every other app has feature limitations that go with it just like Teams. Really hope they are able to get the gallery view in Teams w/ the optimization working in the near future . we're gonna get SO much bitching from execs about it
n
I look forward to the feedback my boss gets when he tells the CIO that there are no optimization packs for the two main conference apps she uses, because she refuses to stop using her personal Mac to launch a Citrix desktop full-time.
I told him to buy a Windows laptop and put an Apple logo on the front, but that was a no go.
a
I actually have found the Mac app to be the smoothest version of the Workspace apps (for launching/resuming sessions/etc) but agree no place in enterprise. funny you should say that because we HAVE guys in my dept that have put the apple sticker on, not because they like apple (they hate them) but its the running joke that if you put that on MAYBE that means they are invincible and dont need A/V or encryption haha
t
I do like that there is a LOT more coverage of these types of technology now - meaning that it seems like everyone is going in the same direction for once. And quickly. The push to get this right is going to be a key differentiator (I HATE that term) for whomever can get it "rightest" first.
n
If Microsoft gets their shit together and figures out a way to provide the same experience in Citrix, that would go a long way.
a
right! cant really use the "any device, any place, any time" claims if its not 1 to 1
m
Teams in citrix in general is a bit of a dumpster fire though, somehow our legacy 2012 users found it and installed it per user into their sessions and it runs like crap and covers the screen in a black box they can’t get rid of until they kill the process.
n
And yet it's still superior to Webex, IME.
m
so now we either need to migrate them because they have abandoned Jabber, which also sucks, in favor of Teams and we canno longer call them on their extensions.
or we need to applocker/mask the per user install of teams in 2012
which will cause an uproar
anything cisco just sucks from an end user perspective, it’s not friendly at all and assumes it’s all going to be managed by a full time webex admin which is insane
a
so Teams in our Citrix environment actually MOSTly functions fairly well...and on windows clients when it does optimize properly calls work really well too (outside of gallery view not working, sharing not working outside of a call, etc). so really if i can get around the issue where it doesnt always optimize we may be in ok shape
n
There's a recent thread on machine/user Teams cleanup on Slack, FWIW.
m
there’s no putting that baby back in
They will be on 2019 by next week which has it set per machine
it’s just never ending with Teams though
I feel like we need a Teams channel
a
nope an unfortunately w/ the all work at home junk and the citrix /teams optimizations not being ready we had to open it up to let people use teams on their home /physical computers so now they've had 2 months to get used to ALL the features (mainly the ones that wont work in a citrix/ optimized ) environment so thats gonna be a mess to try and say ya.....those wont work here
m
Yeah we have the same issue with our training department doing company wide training telling people to use it and it’s not ready for everyone yet, and won’t have all the features that got shown off
we just had a wholesale boycott of Jabber
a
ya mainly for us is we've got all kinds of people using the gallery view and they think thats critical now so not sure how i'm gonna handle it when i get them on these new windows clients w/ optimizations and sell that you CAN'T do gallery view anymore and have to just live w/ Teams deciding who to show
n
I almost want to use App Masking to block the Webex app, and then use Browser Content Redirection to see if it's any better. But I know the second I block the app, execs will complain and that will be that.
a
yup thats how that goes!
