VDA Cleanup utility, then fresh VDA install for me - especially with 2203.
a
That's what I was leaning towards too. Any particular reason why especially with 2203?
n
We saw some weirdness with 1912 CU5 > 2203 CU1 simply upgrading it.
Using the VDA removal tool first has been a 100% success rate.
That said, Ops found issues with 2203 CU1 (haven't even explained it to us yet) that halted our rollout. Sticking with 1912 until early next year.
a
Hmm I'd be curious to hear more about that. We have planning sessions this week and we were possibly going to do the vda upgrade in the last 2 months of the year
n
Yeah, so would we. We're too busy to inquire more since it's not our task.
a
Testing first of course
n
Our environment is massive and incredibly complex, though.
a
That's fair. I'll probably just be cautious with testing here to start. Thanks for the help!

Do you uninstall first, then use VDA Cleanup utility? Or just use the VDA Cleanup utility?
n
Nope, just run the VDA cleanup utility and let that handle everything. Requires a number of reboots, and when you go to install the new VDA, you're going to reboot at least once more than you normally would (IME).

Nice, thanks for the tip
n
Just make sure that you're using the latest VDA Cleanup Utility.

a
cool yup i have a PDQ package that runs the cleanup utility and various reboots nicely so i'll just throw the silent install after
e
Would you mind sharing that PDQ package? Curious how yours is setup.
a
ya for sure! i'm making some changes to it here and testing but i'll get something over to you tomorrow !
alright here's what we have.....this was for when we made the jump to 1912 so it runs the cleanup utility, needed reboots inbetween and then new VDA install w/ command line arguments (tweak to your needs). Not sure if the SetDisplayRequiredMode option is still needed but we've always needed to throw that in or our idle time lock group policy would never work

Excellent. Thank very much! Ours package was pretty similar, mostly some extra stuff to address unique items in our environment.
a
you bet! do you mind sharing yours just to see if there's anything we might find helpful to tweak on our side? always happy to find better ways to do things
