Looks like there is as issue with Windows 11 September patches and Explorer.exe crashing with Citrix and FSLogix container profiles. Multiple people reporting the issue on the Citrix sub-reddit. Edit: Added an "and" between Citrix and FSLogix.

I've opened a case with Citrix.
I'm having the issue with Citrix containers. Another person on the Citrix sub-reddit mentions having it with FSLogix too.

I see it is a windows security feature they enabled. Are you getting that error messages others reported?

a simple logon script which starts explorer.exe works

@Jeff Riechers I do not see event ID 26 in the application logs as mentioned there. I do get an event 1000 for faulting application Explorer.exe.

So updated my lab stuff that is on 2607 upm. no crashes here.
c
no problems on my server 2022 image with fslogix profile and odfc containers
j
Might only be Windows 11. If I have time I will spin up some older fslogix builds to see if I can replicate.

Yes, i can confirm. Windows 11 25H2 and FSLogix with latest updates
Eventviewer -> System -> Application popup: explorer.exe - System Error : The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application.

@c4rm0 I have seen articles that describes issues with Remote Desktop Services after installing the September patches. You have not seen anything like that? I figured that since RDS is required for Citrix on shared desktop, it would cause issues there as well. So far I have not seen anything that supports that, but I don't feel like patching a lot of servers without more info.
KIR doesn't seem to fix the explorer.exe not being loaded
s
KIR didn't fix the issue for us too, Citrix 2402CU4, Latest Fslogix, PVS non-persistent Windows 11 25h2.

Anyone have a workaround for the issue? (Windows 11 25H2) don't want to push it any longer 😣
t
Omnissa meanwhile have a suggested workaround until MS provide fix kb.omnissa.com/s/article/6001783?lang=en_US haven't tried it myself yet with CPM, but also referenced on community.citrix.com/forums/topic/259139-any-news-on-the-explorerexe-not-starting-after-kb5120998kb5124008-topic

Hi guys, there is a KIR available: download.microsoft.com/download/…

I'm just testing it
You will also need to restart your device(s) to apply the group policy setting.
So on your maintenance machines. I will report back if this fix works
Looks like it works. Still got a black screen for 2 seconds
