j
With the new licensing model, does Citrix provide the ability to update netscalers to larger bandwidth? Like 14020 to 14060? Or 8920 to 8950? We have the new Flex licensing, but can't allocate beyond the older base bandwidth limit. And newer hardware doesn't have that ceiling.
r
You will get a Zero Capacity license for the hardware and unlimited bandwidth to assign to it. What I have seen is that. In the blog I wrote about the new licensing there are links to how to migrate from current licenses to the new including the Zero Capacity license. https://www.ferroquesystems.com/resource/understanding-and-transitioning-to-netscaler-flexed-licensing/
j
Yeah, we did that. But it won't let us allocate more than 20 gb to our 8920.
r
Keep in mind however, the platform you are on won’t exceed the max bandwidth it could handle previously.
That’s odd, you should be able to allocate 50. Let me see if I can get an answer to that.
j
Ok. I know previously they had bump up that allowed you to unlock more bandwidth on the units, since it was a software limit, but guess you cant get those anymore.
r
You shouldn’t need it, as you have lots of bandwidth you can assign right?
I’ll dig in and see what I can find.
👍 1
j
Lots of BW. CPL customer.
a
@Jeff Riechers The bandwidth limit is defined by the model, so 8920 is 20GBps
j
Correct me if I am wrong, didn't they have a bandwidth bump license or upgrade you could do on the hardware to unlock more bandwidth? Or was it burned into the system itself at manufacture.
a
I think it's link to model, no problem with VPX however, I have a customer which put 500GBps on VPX/SDX, don't ask me why 😂
r
I have a very large customer who needed to up their 8920 to 8950. Physically, the appliances is identical. The BIOS on the machine knows no difference and yes, you used to be able to purchase a license only upgrade from 8920 to 8950. I reached out to Citrix a couple of months ago (November I believe) and was told that yes, in fact, if you move your appliance from Perpetual or pooled licensing to the Flex license it can be assigned 50gb of bandwidth. I will follow up with the NetScaler team that told me that and ask them about Jeff's problem because as far as I know, you change the physical appliance to point to the license server, you assign the Zero Capacity 8900 series license to the hardware, and you assign the amount of bandwidth you want to the appliance. The license looks like this:
j
Yeah, thats the one we applied on the NS, and it gave us the ability to talk to the license server. I will check more on my side.
r
You can even switch to this, but you still need to swap out the hard drives in order for the hardware to know it is an SDX and not an MPX.
👍 1
Jeff, I would check to be sure the appliance is pointing at the NetScaler Console or agent for it's license, then in the NetScaler Console, you should see the ability to assign the bandwidth there, not on the appliance itself. If it is not permitting you to, then I would check with NetScaler.

a
Just saying you cannot allocate more than 19Gbps here
j
Yup. We switched it over to Flex, and won't go any higher.
a
You are trying to assign more based on your screenshot.
j
Correct, when you convert the hardware to flex it is supposed to remove the software limitation. We are trying to allocate more than the 20 GB limit similar to the bandwidth bump licenses you could do in the past to upgrade hardware to the next tier.
r
Is it a FIPS appliance?
j
Nope, standard 8920
I have emailed my contacts and I will let you know what I hear.
👍 1
You don't mind if I share your screenshot with NetScaler do you Jeff?
j
not a problem.
r
Thanks. Initial response is Yes, you should be able to assign more bandwidth so I sent your screenshot. Let's see what they say.
👍 1
Jeff, can you message me an output of a "show ns license" from the appliance? CLI.

yup
r
That showed it is pooled platinum licensing so that’s good.Try “set ns capacity -unit <specify-mbps-or-gbps> -bandwidth <specify-amount-license-bandwidth> -edition <specify-license-edition>”
j

Which is again odd, as this was a 20Gb model, but only allows 19.
r
That is weird. Can you share the log file? /var/log/license.log. And what version/build is it?

Can you do these commands and share show ns hardware show version May need to open a ticket. Working to get attention on it if you do do engineering will hop on it right away. I’m interested to know the answer as well.

@Jeff Riechers based on the hardware, you have six 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, contributing a total of 6 Gbps bandwidth and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, adding another 20 Gbps. So I would assume it's not possible and will be useless to try to add more than 20
j
I think that is it! Didn't even notice that this unit only had 2 10gb sfp ports, the layout online showed 4 interfaces. Still doesn't explain why 19 is the limit. If we aggregated the 10gb and 6gb we still should be able to go to 26.
a
if all are connected probably, do you have all the network interfaces connected?
r
Yes, the online shows (4) 10gb. It also shows 8 core CPU so I am curious
a
Where do you see 4 10GB on 8000?
Or is it for your customer @Richard Faulkner ?
r
I was looking at 8900.
a
the model @Jeff Riechers shared only shows 2 10GB not 4, isn't it?
a
@Jeff Riechers do you have 8900 or 8000?
j
It was an 8920, when we switched to flex it says 8000.
a
ah ok
Can you switch back to run sh ns hardware?
r
8900 series have 8cpu and (4) 10gb adapters.
a
it's weird that switching to flex show only 2 10Gbps in this case ...
r
It is also showing 4 cpu not 8.
Is the license (Zero capacity) the wrong one? It’s matching an 8000 not 8900 series.
a
Z Capacity is linked to type not model (SDX, MPX), no?
j
It could be the customer gave me the wrong model, they have lots of gear, could be this IS only an 8020. I will get back.

a
Can you please share the Z Capacity license?
j
They are CPL, we allocated like 200 GB
r
@Arnaud Pain that’s right, platform only.
a
@Jeff Riechers Can you share the Z capacity license? Thanks!
r
I am not at a computer. I think you can log in to Citrix Support and pull warranty and model info from the serial number. That should tell us. But, physically (4 cpu, 32gb RAM, two 10gb NICs) matches the 8200, 8400, 8600, 8800 series not the 8900.
That serial number maps to an 8015 which cannot be boosted to 30gb. Sorry dude.
