Hey everyone regarding the new licensing changes thats announced. We are completely on-prem and have Virtual apps and Desktops Standard with 400 Per User (non current) license. Is the changes only for new purchases or will this affect us? Sorry for something that's probably been asked a million times

There is a good post that summarizes the whole thing. It's in German but browser translation should work. https://www.teccle-group.de/blog/citrix-veraendert-lizenzmodell/

What's your hypervisor / bare metal situation?

What are your plans? If you want to move up to hitting cloud from on-prem and deploy more netscalers I would go to Hybrid Multi-Cloud. If just sticking with on-prem and no netscalers I would go with Citrix for Private Cloud. If you are thinking of transitioning to something else within 18 months, I would probably do an early renewal before the Sept price increases just to kick that decision down the line. The other thing you might want to do is get with a CSP, I am expecting there will be some that will look to consolidate some of these smaller customers under one larger umbrella to potentially get the price per user down.

ESXI is the hypervisor ATM but we are awaiting pricing and expecting to move to xencenter cuz of cost
j
Yeah.....about that........Not going to be included with new suites, and will cost money. Take a look at xcp-ng. Same xenserver, more features and better support.

yeah - part of the changes at Citrix is that XenServer will have to be paid for and not included for free....
b
I didn't think citrix apps and desktops officially supported xcp-ng? I know it's just a fork of xencenter bit didn't want to go unsupported 😦
r
It isn't and going unsupported is a big decision.... I can't decide if the decision to announce charging is really dumb or really ethical... if they'd left it for 6 months a lot of vSphere under XenApp / XD would have probably moved and people then feel misled but as it is it'll probably make more stay on the ESXi they know and trust ...
The German blog has some approximate prices for XS on it (but does say not finalized)
j
I am going to test it in my lab. From the looks of it the interactions are still the same. But I can let you know what I find.
b
Yep for sure. We def can't go on anything unsupported. I think it's def a very ethical thing that they announced before all the moves

so existing customers with CVAD Universal Sub licenses won't be granted the Netscaler premium functionality on existing standard licensed netscalers until they migrate upon early/renewal?
r

isn't that dealing with just CSP type licensing?
b
Ya I thought that was CSP only for that as well but who knows.
j
I wonder if they are going to allow CSP to go to CPL. If not this is pretty much going to end SMB under CSP in cloud.
I did test XCP. Everything worked up until I attempted to create machines with MCS. Everything worked, but it crashed at adding the machines to Machine Catalog. So if you are using PVS or persistent, it will work.
