One can imagine it removing WEM from VDA's that included it in the install, but I don't recall seeing it remove WEM from standalone setups.
☝️ 1
n
Same.
r
yea I thought so too. But I just went through it and it deleted the WEM programs files folder but kept it in Appwiz
It was the lastest VDA util I noticed it on
My installs are always separate as well. I Never install WEM with the VDA. Always separate, but anyways. Something to watch out for. I just reproduced it in a clients environment as well as my lab
@Nick Panaccio how do you guys typically remove VDA software now? I always used the cleanup tool myself. But looks like they are saying to use the builtin uninstaller now.

@Anthony Shi
r
I submitted my feedback on the here as well for what I am seeing. https://podio.com/webforms/15459646/1036539
n
We have an SCCM task sequence that goes through a bunch of absurd steps to completely wipe the old installs. VDA Cleanup Utility is the first part, and it runs I believe 4 times (looks for the exit code each time), reboots, runs the VC++ installer separately since we have had issues with the built-in installer from Citrix, reboots, then runs the VDA installer. We're going to be pushing 2203 CU3 in Prod in the next month or so, and once that's done, I intend to only run the VDA installer in the future. I don't want to continue down this path of complicated TS's because of old garbage VDA installs.
r
You might want to test the vda uninstall now. It’s removing WEM. I was able to reproduce the in 3 environments yesterday
Separate installs as well
n
We only use this in our persistent environment, where the WEM agent is not installed.
r
Oh okay then your good
n
For NP, we use App Layering, so it's always a clean install. But you should definitely report that behavior.
r
I have, I also have your notes you sent before on the vda install that I looked at for a reference. Not sure why I asked again. My bad
n
No worries

Ignore the old versions, but I just used VDA Cleanup Utility v1.9.0.19 to remove VDA 7.15, WEM Agent 2005 was preserved in the process
r
That is odd now. I meant to state I observed this on 2203 and 2305 VDA, WEM being 2212. It's odd that I was able to see the 3 times, and you did not see it.
Going to try once more the fourth time to quad check
d
Keep in mind that the Installation sits in C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\Workspace Environment Management Agent ... I was looking in C:\Program Files (x86)\Norskale first and I thought it was removed...
r
yea that was what it removed "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\Workspace Environment Management Agent"
d
thats strange
r
I will make a quick video
d
I'll check in my lab as well this evening
r
I appreciate it too
n
What build are you using, Ray? I have been using v1.8.0.11.
r
v1.9.0.19
n
I take it you reported this on the CTX page? https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX209255/vda-cleanup-utility
If you guys have a Citrix support contract, I'd open a ticket, too.
r
Yea I reported it. Being on the partner side. I was told we are not allowed to open tickets anymore. Not sure if that is true, kind of a black hole for me on this side. But I am testing again and recording it to show
a
@Sharp Guo could you check?
r
In the video go to 08:12 and after step 3 of 8 runs you will see the WEM folder get deleted. Reboot, Agent is gone, but add/remove programs shows it still. But it's gone. WEM agent 2304 on this example. yesterday it was 2212 and 1912 (testing for a client)
n
And this was a standalone WEM install? Wow, that's goofy.
r
Yep it was
n
I wonder if it's not actually uninstalling it, but rather deleting the folder entirely, which would explain why you still see it in the apps list.
r
possible, but because of the folder being ripped out, it breaks the WEM agent. Making me have to reinstall
n
Out of curiosity, can you try the 1.8 build of the VDA cleanup utility to see if that does the same thing? If it's easy enough for you to reproduce
r
I need to go find it. Do they allow you to download older versions?
can you upload it here?
n
Let me see if I can. We're heavily blocked at work, so I may not be able to.
r
Ill look in my repository as well. I have all kinds of old ones. Just not sure about 1.8
I don't have it. But I will look online to see if I can find it
n
Yeah, one of our 30 security apps is blocking me from uploading it, so I can't get it to you.
r
No worries man
Thanks Paul
1.8. did it too. This is super strange.
I feel like I am losing my mind, I never encounter this issue before. haha But it's okay, might be by design now. Who knows. For now I am going back to the /removeall for the VDA side for them.
a
@Ray Davis, no worries, @Sharp Guo would find some engineers to help out tomorrow as it is night time here.
πŸ™ 1
s
we will try it tomorrow. thanks for your information! @Ray Davis

r
my pleasure guys. Let me know how I can help further.
n
If it winds up being a bug, send Ray some Citrix swag.

I do know they smoked the WEM agent being with VDA bundled in which was good move , but yea, if you have a manually deployed agent, not sure why the cleanup would go clean that off as well at that point.

Test the v1.8 and v1.9 VDA cleanup tools on the local environment. Although these tools delete the WEM folder and some of the registries, the WEM program still appears in the Appwiz. We plan to add an option for users to control whether to remove the WEM program and enhance the removal process for a thorough cleanup of all elements. Thanks for your information! @Ray Davis
r
Yea but the WEM agent is useless after the vda tool is ran.
s
yes, you are right. the tool deletes the WEM folder right now. you can choose to keep the WEM agent after the option is added in the future.
r
Understood. In the meantime you guys might want to update the docs with what’s happening. Up to you though.

Good find @Ray Davis that is a nasty issue

r
Thanks James, I stumbled on it the hard way. But Glad I did, the client isn't happy but, I also I always tell clients to test things before hand. In this case they did not test and rolled it into prod. Which broke them WEM agents. So I had to quickly help them, which led to this thread and testing. I love the VDA cleanup tool, it's been solid for many years. Things happen as we are all human beings. no ones fault here.
n
Sounds like the client F'd around and found out.
