Just as much as the app typically would. Example like CLCL Clipboard only takes 54MB, bigger applications like say Tosca (automation software) that take up 8GB. It also depends on if you include multiple applications in a given stack. In theory you could capture multiple applications in a given stack. The default template is 10GB so unless you alter the template you are limited really to that size on each capture.

Based on your FSLogix thread as well, it really also depends on the storage you are on, for the packages for app stacks. I have had it work on sata and on high performing SSDs. It really depends on how busy it will be, which is typically dependent on how many users you will have in your environment. Also how it will be attached, physical workstations or VMs. Persistent vs non-persistent (done several ways).

I can also reference some of the whitepapers they have out there if you have not already seen them. Also keep in mind they have the older version 2.x which is a different architecture than say the 4.x they have available.

Thanks for responses. We use Nutanix and it is all SSD. We’ll definitely make use of non-persistent desktops. <@UQT3HP34M> you say that in theory you could package multiple apps in a stack. Does that mean you personally avoid doing multiple apps? Was talking to VMware the other day and he said try and stick to 2-3 stacks so I would definitely have multiple apps in one stack.
Have you experienced issues with going beyond the default template size?

Hi Guy.  This is an area with a big “it depends.”  First it depends on whether you are using App Volumes 2.x or 4.x. There are different methods for managing applications in each. 

The question of 1 app per app stack or multiple also depends on your use cases and the application overlap between use cases. We have customers that have successfully deployed large app stacks with multiple applications mixed with single-app app stacks. 

You can also extend the app stack template to be larger than 10GB to store larger and/or more applications. This is supported, and there is a KB that describes how to do it

App Stacks are also thin provisioned, so they only use the space required. 

<@U01HCTZDS3S> Just preference on our deploys of 1 app per stack vs multiple apps in a given stack. As Sean mentioned it is completely plausible to have multiple apps in a given stack and supported. I just threw out "in theory" since I don't deploy many in that fashion unless it is warranted. An example of that would be an applications dependency on a version of Java we may not keep in the image or other interdependent  apps the main app might require.

Realized you had another question in that response. No I have not had a need to go beyond the template size, come close to the limit, I think I have one capture that is close to 9GB. never had to worry going over that size with any of my captures.

Yes! Please follow the supported Agent installation order:

1. VMware Tools
2. VDI Agent, like Horizon View
3. VMware DEM Agent
4. VMware App Volumes Agent

if you run OSOT after every change, the final result of ‘Finalize the OS’ will remain consistent

no didn't experience this (in my homelab) yet. does the svservice.log on the VDI say something about it, when attaching the application package?

I don’t believe so.  I can double check but I know VMware support has been looking at this and they didn’t see anything.

Thanks for the link.  Yes shared licensing is on.  We’re using FSLogix, not UEM, but still a good idea for me to review this and make sure we’re capturing the user reg keys, by default I think it grabs them all.

Yes and no, ours was tied to the use of app volumes and FSLogix. A few of our app stacks we have captured on version 2.18 ties something into the profile that ends up given odd messages saying it cannot open outlook. Our only fix was to un-assign the app stacks when the users would reset passwords or change password. The odd thing is it only affects a certain user base and not everyone. I would say it wasn't a permanent fix but a work around the issue.

Prior to the "work around" above we did a lot of trouble shooting and could not pin point where it was hooking in to cause the issue. It's mostly apps that are tied into outlook and office products.

I also use FSLogix in our environment.  Doesn’t seem to be a factor with this issue but something to keep in mind.  And our workaround right now is also remove the user from the AppVolumes entitlement group and add back.  I’m going to try excluding the Office .exe’s and program directories from a custom snapvol.cfg file also uninstall/reinstall Office and AppVolumes.  :crossed_fingers:

<@UQT3HP34M> I appreciate you mentioning having a problem with AppVolumes and FSLogix working together.  That got me thinking and testing a bit more and I think my issue is also related to how the 2 of them work together.  When profiles disks are attached AND an appstack is attached I get the TPM alert but if either the profile disks or appstacks aren’t attached then it’s fine.  I added the Office directories and applications to a custom snapvol.cfg file but that didn’t solve the issue.  I’m now thinking I need to add FSLogix to this custom snapvol.cfg and see if that helps.

That would be great to know how that goes!

It was a real pain before the command line tools csme along. Not that they are there it makes the process a lot easier.

I have a healthcare application that requires updating every 2 to 3 weeks (but 150 different appstacks). So automating was the only way to go for me. I'm automating through GitLab and runners. I have this working as a proof of concept and its working very well. I just need to fire in some more error handling etc.

Does anyone know why the VMware Horizon OS Optimization Tool seems to screw up the app vols agent? The workflow seems to indicate that when using the tool to enable windows updates bit you should re-apply your optimizations and after that the app vols agent just stops working - I have to pretty much reinstall it every time to get it working.

are you talking new Teams as  capturing as appstack?

New Teams is installed on the base image not appstack , but when using writable it won’t launch when uses logs in. I can see is trying to launch on logs and procmon but it errors out an exits. If writable is disabled it launches. 

are you on latest View 2312 ? I saw somewhere that is kind of the requirements for the New Teams. Maybe AppVol needed to be on that version as well. Just a guess.

Does anyone get the activity logs spammed with Manager API Logins?  If so, have you found a way to turn off this logging or at least decrease the amount of API calls?  I have seen this in two separate environments in App Volumes 2303 and 2312

Has anyone captured MSIX applications as App Volumes successfully? We're exploring deploying New Outlook using App Volumes. I have it captured and it attaches correctly but the application isn't provisioned for the user.

I followed a separate KB from Omnissa, not that specific guide although the steps all appear to be the same. Everything works until I get to the "validate" stage. I'll try to re-capture again and see if that resolves it. I have a support case open as well, just hoping to get some real world feedback from here.
