Anyone see Citrix graphic engine taking 1gb of ram? 

ICA multi-stream - we use this internally to QoS around MPLS WAN.  Now a lot of users are external accessing via Gateway, there is no need for multi-stream ICA for them.  Does anybody know if we can keep it enabled for LAN/WAN use, but have it disabled when accessing the VDA through Citrix Gateway?  Looks like an ICA Access profile might do the job, but - surprise surprise - not available in Standard Edition :disappointed:

We don't _have_ to upgrade right now but I dont see the current work posture changing any time soon and want to keep moving the ball down the field.

see a few other people mention it and happened to me last week when upgrading a site to 1912. The configuration service / trust service don't start after upgrading the first DDC from 7.15 to 1912. The DB schema isnt upgraded at that stage as upgraded studio/start automatic upgrade not run. So a restore of snapshot of DDc before install and then retry the DDC upgrade/site upgrade fixed it for me after trying multiple other stuff it seems the upgrade corrupts those fma services somehow

I thought about that, wasn't sure if there was an easy way to export published app/delivery group and policy settings if doing a new site...looked into it briefly about a year ago and found some powershell-fu that looked like it could do it but not sure if there's a better way.

It'd be easy enough to play Netscaler or Storefront games and swing over to a different site but from a level of effort perspective wasn't sure it'd be worth it

I upgraded a customer of mine from 7.15 CU3 to 1912 CU1 on Monday without issue.

We recently upgraded from 7.15 cu2 directly to 1912 cu1 without any issues. I think like most stated after the upgrade you may get studio saying it needs to upgrade twice but just click through to do what it wants and worked fine for us at least. I was nervous about doing it with everyone remote too but went well

start from 7.15CU5, upgrade component by component (license, pvs, director, storefront, delivery controllers) ... make sure you've SF already in unified experience ... and before you start snapshot the VMs, it might save you

Snapshots and backups first, of course!  We have a secondary site that I'd planned to upgrade first.

In Storefront 'classic' it was possible to show a tooltip when we moved the mousepointer over a published (VDI) desktop. It allowed us to display the VDI name (pretty useful for those users having multiple VDI). Anybody knows how we can do this with Storefront "unified experience" (can it be done in the name of the published VDI) ?

We stumbled on a workaround on a similar thread a couple of days ago, looks like we hit a limit on the number of audio devices that can be redirected to the session. In my case unplugging one audio device from the endpoint and reconnecting worked around it.

Yes. Had that once. Can't remember if it was the 32 bit browser thing or on Remote PC where GPO based Policy won't work so we had to use CTX policies in studio.

Ah so ended up being a client side issue? Strange thing I can have a 2016 desktop and Win10 on the same endpoint and only the Win10 has the issue. might be time for CTX support

As Kevin mentioned, this happened to me when I plugged in a 7th audio device.  When I disable one to get to 6 or under the issue goes away for me.  Doesn't matter which device I disable, so I disabled the HDMI audio that goes to my tiny monitor speakers.

I had to do the DB upgrade manual to get it to work. The docs seem to be incorrect or I read it wrong. You have to run the Site DB Script, Monitor DB script, then Logs DB script. The enable the services so they register back to the DB. 3rd time was the charm.

Out of interest why are you doing in-place upgrades? as opposed to creating new delivery controllers etc.

Automation!! We build a new environment (DDC, SF, FAS, NetScaler, New DB’s) in parallel for our customers using DSC, so they have a rolling environment, roll forward or rollback. I asked cos it’s a service we offer (shameless plug), and it’s exactly the reasons you are seeing, that customers stick with their current version and put off the upgrade - hence why I asked

So you have scripts that migrate it all as well?

We don’t migrate, we create the DG, Apps etc that are defined in the DSC configuration. I’m not saying it’s easy, but once you’ve defined the configuration, then you can rebuild over and over again. No, the settings are defined in the DSC configuration I.e. what DC you want, what apps you want published. The environment is built from that. So in your case you’d specify all the settings you have in your existing environment in the DSC configuration, then you’d run it, that would build you an new environment that same as the old. New upgrade comes along, run the same config again, make sure any manual changes (:face_with_raised_eyebrow:) are again incorporated into the configuration, run again - rinse and repeat and you have a Citrix Evergreen Deployment :wink:

If you can’t automate all the settings, then you might have to tweak one or two, but that’s way easier then crossing your fingers and hoping you don’t foobar your DB or Controllers and waste days troubleshooting

I can also build a full Citrix environment in ~1 hour using fast clone, full PowerShell script. You need to migrate your settings after, a PoSh script can import/export.

question for those running VDA in azure. What install switches do you use for your clients? I am still dealing with NVv4 MCS issue. Thinking maybe this is client related (though the same client works fine on F4s). Example do you use /virtualmachine and /optimize switches?

Same exact published desktop, just on separate sites. We have two side-by-side CVAD 1912 environments, identical in every way.

I dont think you can, you can load balance users across both sites or not and have it in order of failover preference.

So what you are wanting is session re connection across two separate sites?

You could change your session re-connection policy - Set-BrokerEntitlementPolicyRule &lt;Delivery-Group-name&gt; -SessionReconnection DisconnectedOnly

Needs testing, this is technically not storefront so is applying at the wrong level

how are you able to see the desktops in the other site to launch both? I would think aggregation should hide them.

It's only showing one desktop to the user, so aggregation is working properly. The issue I've seen is that if a user has a session that crashes for whatever reason, and the VDA hangs, then can launch the same desktop, and it'll connect them to a VDA in the other site, minus their FSLogix profile.

So far, no user has complained. I just happened to come across it while looking in Director.

Static pinning seems the only solution in this scenario chap.

Assign users to groups and map them to controllers.

I think it was here that someone posted where power management is in place, when desktops are powered up and registered, the sessions will broker to newly assigned desktops rather than desktops that have been sitting idle for some time. Is there a way to adjust this behavior?

Check the CPU usage on your VDA, it shouldn't spike because Zoom. Also you a new process on your client taking up some CPU.

good call thanks! i also noticed i had things flipped (client/plugin between my vda and client) and now in the zoom vdi client i can see stats in the call that help indicate as well.   very early on but so far in my brief tests this works WAY better than teams optimization

for what its worth to anyone else in the same situation , brief testing so far Zoom VDI blows Teams Optimization in Citrix out of the water.  can do gallery view (up to 9 at least) and screen share easily and great audio/video performance

Looks like i have to tell it to load the audio services.

It has something to do with the Audio sandbox feature, which for some reason doesn't work in a remote session.

The issue is both with ICA/HDX and RDP/RemoteFX, so it's not a Citrix related issue.

I know we have strange sound issues when you Citrix XD or XA. Sometimes sounds works then its doesnt.

Definitively not. Even if you use the Workspace App you will have an error caused by your Internet Explorer version. I saw that error few weeks ago. I have to upgrade IE :white_frowning_face:

If you access it through NS gateway, do you still have the issue?

Hearing that you still have IE8, your receiver can also lead to issues. With 1912 LTSR I would really recommend Citrix Workspace App, have seen different strange issues at customers which were all fixed by switching to CWA

When using NS Gateway, error doesn’t show up during authentication but when NS hands off to SF that’s when we see the error. 

Found your question searching for some info - have a customer with this very problem. 7.15 CU6 VDA, Win10 1909.  Havent been able to remedy. You have any luck?

In my case, I think it was a corrupt Platform layer (I use App Layering). I created a new Platform Layer and built the same image, and the problem was gone.

Interesting. No layering here.  I'm leaning towards a reinstall of the VDA. We're also verifying proper A/V exclusions.

It's policy based for sure.  Just add ACCEPT: at the top, just to test and validate.

Teams is a mess, but we have to deal with it. At least here in DK, I am not convinced that Zoom will get much traction.

zoom is great 'n all but its not an actual collaboration tool like teams. The electron based teams is a nightmare to manage properly but it does provide some great features.

My current project has used teams for nearly three years and also just enabled and pushed out the audio video capability after upgrading to 1912 LTSR.  Audio video so far works well with teams redirection and doesn't have any more or less issues than using audio/video for skype.

Again I agree, Teams is a great collaboration tool no doubt. My wife works as a teacher and during lockdown, here in DK, she used it everyday to share assignments and homework with the students and attend meetings with her colleagues

10,000 remote users on Teams using Citrix, I'd say 90% of the issues are caused by users being thick. Since we recorded a video showing "how to use Teams" and giving them some tricks to avoid issues, we've seen a remarkable uptick in satisfaction. A lot of niggly little bits of behaviour, yes, but overall users are pretty satisfied with it. We still have some stragglers where they can't get audio to work with particular devices and it is annoying when it gets in one of its loops, but I'd say most issues come from stupid stuff, like users having two audio devices echoing or some maniac disabling sound on reams of endpoints.

Which is not to say it infuriates me with the rough edges - but to be fair, there's not a lot of software that I am satisfied with :slightly_smiling_face:

We hads some users in EMEA region state their video would start to cut out after 20 minutes consistently. (remote workers)

we've been on teams for a year and like others have said as a collaboration tool its really good.  we've gotten some great use out of it especially during the remote work stuff right now.  audio/video is another story , especially once we started using it optimized.   Theres been a lot of bumps in the road either on the Citrix or Microsoft side some which have been fixed along the way, some still being worked on (ie. currently working w/ Citrix on why the websocketservice.exe doesnt work correctly everytime which puts teams in a weird state).....a lot of times people cant join meetings and have to fully reboot to fix......need to fully clear all profile data for teams sometimes to view shared documents in a group, etc.   On top of that even if it all DID work consistently you still have the inherit current limitations that you cannot do gallery view (only can see the 1 active video feed at a time which is a mess when you have many talking) and the pretty bad screen sharing limitations when optimized.   It will get there i'm sure but we're in a demanding state right now with users that see all the features on tv and want it now.  for that its why we're pushing our company to continue to use teams for all of our collaboration/chat but integrate Zoom into it for the meetings/calls since at least so far it seems to work smoother for us for what its worth

Teams will probably be the issue which kills Citrix at my company. :disappointed:. 

The feature gaps (gallery view,etc) and the constant difficulty with audio/video is affecting the perception of Citrix.  
If I hear the phrase “teams works just great on my Fat laptop” again.... I despair.

I was turned down for Zoom even though i could show more value. They said just open support ticket they will change it LOL. Not that easy

Like we were talking the consistency issues I'm sure eventually will get worked out and stable but at least for now even if they do we're still left with the screen sharing and no gallery view limitations which don't appear to be going away anytime soon. A support ticket won't do anything for that and will get closed right away at working as designed right now so I feel your pain! Hoping our zoom vdi pitch has some luck here because of it

I'm in a university/medical workspace with a large VDI footprint (little over 1K concurrent). We have both pooled desktops and present desktops using Teams. Also a mix of Win and Mac's using the latest Workspace App. It seams Receiver had issues with Teams and Zoom for us. The Workspace App HTML 5 client on ChromeOS works well too. Our CVAD build is 7.15 CU5 in production. We haven't seen any audio, sharing, and collaboration feature issues. Now video is whole other item. Most endpoints cameras aren't recognized and if they are, audio/video sync is way off or video freezes. We are planning a 1912 CU1 udpate and in the lab Teams isn't much better. I understand the latest CR and the optimization tool is better, though we are staying on LTSR release for now.

I will have to go back and read the latest CR. I didnt see anything on optimziations are better

CWA 2006 introduces support for DTMF and enhanced screen sharing, so this is only tied to the client side not VDA

i've been working with Citrix support (referencing that troubleshooting guide article) and theres stil some bugs w/ the winsocketservice.exe that is a bit flakey causing issue

Mainly, we produce collateral to tell them how to work around its foibles. Users seem pretty happy once we save them from their own idiocy

in our situation we have been using teams for a year unoptimized (linux based thin clients previously) .   once we had everyone work at home the push for video got stronger and since the linux clients coudlnt optimize the video side just yet we had to allow personal computers to be able to connect to teams or cell phones.  so they got a taste of ALL the features (gallery view the big one) so once we updated our Citrix environment to 1912 now the VDA could run Teams optimized when they used a windows client at home and now the lack of gallery view became a deal breaker for managers/execs.  the screen sharing limitation too for some but gallery view was the big one

We just never let them run it on personal devices. Easy. Any personal device access connects to a Citrix desktop. Also, we've always been very clear about the limitations. I know you always get people (me included) who make out like a particular feature is vital but really it isn't, it's just a pain and involves patience.

completely agree with you there! that always was our stance (no personal devices).  we just got pinned in a corner by management when we moved the whole company remote and then they demanded video capabilities NOW (like i said we current have only linux clients so wasnt possible w/ teams at that time).   the gallery view limitation i've been warning about going back to Skype even so frustrating when they NOW seeing it and playing like its the first they've heard of it (thats another story though :slightly_smiling_face: ).  so for us at least its hard to put that raft back in the box now haha.  i'm in the camp that video is a nice to have/not a necessity for EVERY group and at the very least the speaker view is very usable.  but once you've seen gallery view along side speaker view its hard to go back

100% agree <@URVNXB96C> after all the fragility of Teams on Citrix to then not have gallery view as well, is a really problem. 
managing groups of staff remotely, the gallery view is becoming the only feature our hierarchy are interested in. 

Like I said Teams will become a deal breaker for Citrix. 
At the moment, we are replacing around 20 thin clients per week with fat laptops, purely based on Teams usage (HR needs external interviews and gallery view is a must, etc). :disappointed:

thats why we're pushing hard to continue to use teams for all the collaborative and chat abilities but integrate zoom in with it for meetings/calls.  so far at least seems to be a pretty good sweet spot to let each tool do what it does best and give the users all those capabilities now rather than continue to wait for MS to get Teams get past the current limitations.

Be great to use Zoom but our network security team have deemed it a security risk (after the initial press) so management are spooked and won’t touch it. :disappointed:

we have a kickoff POC call with zoom this morning and that was one of the questions i was going to bring up.  i know some of the things they've done since then to address those concerns but to get an official response in case those same questions come up w/ our security guys

If zoom can make it great in VDI. Teams can as well. It just depends on how much MS and Citrix make it happen.

agree'd.....Teams has a lot of potential building off of the limited things Skype could do.    and right to the zoom vs teams thing......its possible but i wonder how much Microsoft is going to push for it when they have their own WVD  now.  for us we're just tired of waiting  and being told timelines that keep getting bumped down the road

As a workaround you might consider to put the Teams Linux Client on your endpoints and let the users choose this local client if the optimized Teams from within Citrix isn’t suitable.

unfortunately most of our linux devices are old and cannot be updated (igel v5 OS) but we do have newer clearcube (stratodesk) devices.   We have chromebooks for mobile use and kind of do that w/ people now for teams web (pretty limited)  but they dont like that approach since they have to bounce back and forth between their VDI desktop and that.  my thought is if we'd go w/ zoom at least chromebooks have a native app for chrome os so if we HAD to go back and forth at least its a more functional tool.

I'm curious because you didn't explicitly mention it... Did you switch your VDA to use HDX 3D Pro?  It has been awhile since I tinkered with it, but I was under the impression that enabling 3D pro would get the benefit of the GPU.

Sorry, I did yes. It took me ages to figure out how to do that. I guess you used to have to do it when you install the VDA, but it's now part of the installation or just 'detected'. In the end, it was just really a case of tinkering with the Citrix policies, disconnecting and reconnecting to refresh the policies, and I could get HDX 3D Pro to turn on and off. But I'm not sure what I was expecting. Like I said, I'm not doing and CAD work, or anything really that would leverage the GPU in that sort of way, but I was expecting better performance in my Remote PC session, not worse. But then again, I'm not really sure what I was expecting. I found I had to switch to 'pixel perfect' to get the session to be higher quality, but that has the effect of disabling HDX 3D Pro, it seemed.

<@U0125D243RN> can you share a screenshot of RDA with the settings you used?
Lossless mode needs to have Allow visually lossless enabled but is not recommended for remote scenarios. I would use Build To Lossless if you need a Lossless image. 

P.S: HDX3DPro is now by default installed and enabled by the policy: Optimize for 3D graphics
