Happy Wednesday everyone! Over the past few months there have been efforts across the ecosystem to push towards an OpenVox 9 release. Today we have
9.0.0.alpha1
packages available in the testing repositories. These packages are essentially the OpenVox 8.26.2 release with a couple of additions: - The package includes Ruby 4.0.5 instead of 3.2.11. - OpenSSL has been ugpraded from 3.0 to 3.5. - Packages are available for Fedora 44. As these are ALPHA builds, there are also some quirks that we will be working out over the coming weeks: - The packages are available in the
openvox8
section of the testing repo. This will change to
openvox9
once that repository is ready. -
puppet --version
and
Puppet::PUPPETVERSION
will both return 8.26.2. - Ruby 4 broke the Windows build, due to differences between the
msvcrt
and
ucrt
runtimes, so Windows packages are not included in this release. The testing repositories can be configured by using the
openvox8-release
packages from: - https://s3.osuosl.org/openvox-artifacts/index.html#repo_test/apt/ - https://s3.osuosl.org/openvox-artifacts/index.html#repo_test/yum/ No breaking changes from OpenVox 9 have landed yet. The purpose of this release is to make Ruby 4 available and give folks a chance to test OpenFact on Fedora 44 before we add that platform to the 8.x release line. Please reach out in #C088QSEH1RA to discuss any items related to Ruby 4 or OpenFact on Fedora 44. Keep an eye on #C08UG359WKE for progress towards the next alpha or beta builds of OpenVox 9. Many thanks to @bastelfreak for getting Ruby 4 and OpenSSL 3.5 building, to @Steven Pritchard for getting
openvox
running under Ruby 4, and to @Nick Burgan for the new release pipelines that make it easy to ship these builds. There's definitely others whose work has gone into moving OpenVox 9 forward that I'm forgetting --- please add any shout-outs to a thread off of this announcement!
