07/28/2026, 2:24 PMIF EXISTS clause in your statement.
Why this is happening
The error message Error in list of partitions to [p20260714] (where p20260714 is your partition name) occurs when the system attempts to resolve the partition you've targeted for deletion but cannot find it in the table metadata.
How to resolve it
1. Check if the partition exists
Run the following command to see the actual list of partitions and their names:
sql
SHOW PARTITIONS FROM your_table_name;
Verify that the name p20260714 is spelled correctly and exists in the PartitionName column.
2. Use the IF EXISTS clause
To avoid this error (especially in scripts where you are dropping and recreating), add IF EXISTS to your DROP statement. This ensures the command succeeds even if the partition is already gone:
sql
ALTER TABLE your_table_name DROP PARTITION IF EXISTS p20260714;
3. Check for Batch Drop Syntax (v3.4+)
If you are trying to drop multiple partitions at once, ensure you are using the correct parentheses syntax:
sql
-- Correct
ALTER TABLE your_table_name DROP PARTITIONS (p20260713, p20260714);
-- Incorrect (may cause list resolution errors)
ALTER TABLE your_table_name DROP PARTITION p20260713, p20260714;
Note on recreating
If you successfully drop the partition and then fail to recreate it (e.g., with an "Already Exists" error), keep in mind that:
* Trash Interval: By default, dropped partitions are moved to the "Trash" for 24 hours. While they are in the trash, you can't create a new partition with the same range/values if they overlap, but you can usually create one with the same name once the metadata is cleared.
* Force Drop: If you want to skip the trash and immediately clear the metadata, use the FORCE keyword (use with caution):
sql
ALTER TABLE your_table_name DROP PARTITION p20260714 FORCE;
