Hi! What if we make a hotel party at the motel 6 in Oakland? We think we should begin with a v1 mvp prototype party with simply three rooms and only alcohol, nothing illegal. What do you think?

So I like the end goal and the idea of having an MVP….but I don’t understand the practicality of a 3 room MVP. Wouldn’t we have to like…behave? And wouldn’t that kinda defeat the point?
By “behave”, I mean “be quiet after 10", not roam around the hallways, etc
What about one of the small motels down the street from you? They have like 10 rooms, right? x$100/room = $1000….

The concept was largely to build situational awareness and get a sense of the motel's vibe and security situation. So yea, would need to behave. The first test doesn't have to be a full 3-room party, though--it could just be a couple of people in a room or two.

Andy’s suggestion. He wanted us to stress test the motel a bit. In other words, keep pushing till we find the limits of acceptable behavior there. So that would be more like 3 rooms than 1. And we would not be quiet after 10. We’d get a first violation and then a second and then see what’s next.
The alternative (which was my default plan) was to go ahead, organize an event, and make that the stress-test.

I do agree with Gene that acceptable behavior varies a lot with how much of the hotel we've rented out and how much communication we've had with the management. I still think it's worth doing a scoping-out night, but think we should plan to behave reasonably conventionally. I don't really see the point of pissing the hotel off as our first interaction.

Yup. I don’t see us being able to throw any kind of event at a hotel without the consent of management. We’d get thrown out in an hour. I’ve rented out a whole hotel before (32 rooms, Tahoe for our wedding in 2013) and they were happy to give us tours and work on all sorts of details with us. And then backed off and let us have our party. I think this is a great idea and we should pursue it, but as Sophie said - I don’t see a good relationship starting with us pissing off management and showing that we’re reckless ravers, not organized event planners who won’t fuck up their hotel with the power tools and 2x4s they’re bringing in the door.

I made a channel #motel-check for those who want to discuss this further. Gene I couldn’t really tell above if you, like, want to get into this or just had some strong opinions

I want to get in on this and I have strong opinions.

By “this”, I mean “putting together a hotel party”. Not “piss off a hotel manager and get the cops called on us”. I’m not in on that.
So if that’s compatible with what you’re doing, then I’m in. Otherwise – have fun!
