:question: When tailoring a resume, do you only include relevant tasks from each relevant job, or do you include less-relevant aspects of your relevant jobs in the interest of providing better context?

Relevance can mean both “I did a thing that’s just like the thing you’d want me to do”….but it can also mean “I led a complex project making something completely unrelated but that shows that I can lead a complex project”

I include a complete description even if not as relevant. To me tailoring things is about making sure the key words and skills for the specific job pop up

oooh good point Rochelle; I keep forgetting that point and just did it and realised a huge component of my job wasn't reflected in my resume! ("Managed vendor relationships for food/drink services, office supplies, cleaning services")

I kept a certain part of my resume job agnostic and the other parts job custom

I always give a salary range, if possible

Rule of thumb for money negotiations: the first person to name a number generally loses. Ask the employer for the salary range if you can and use that.

Employers will always pay you at the lowest range to be cost effective for the business. If you have leverage, you can always negotiate. Most establish employers have a salary range attached to the job requisition (low-mid-high). Everything is negotiable.

most start ups don’t have that established, so you can use that to your advantage

You can write “open to negotiation” but when you talk to the actual recruiter - give a range of what you would like. The minimum number should be what you would actually be ok with. It’s always better to have more pay.

range: I feel weird about this one bc tech salaries are so insane that i would actually be theoretically ok with less pay than my last job, but on principle i want at least that haha

and yes, I can totally put a moneybag in this field, but I think I will not

Don’t go backwards! I learned that the hard way. Also, most women don’t even negotiate, so I always want to encourage all my female professionals to please please negotiate

My final pay at Symbio was 86% higher than my starting pay :upside_down_face:

Inflation is a thing lately and just because you could scrape by on less doesn’t mean you should. Also people will infer things about your value based on how much you value yourself. It’s that paradox that sometimes the same item will sell more at a higher price because people will assume that higher price = more valuable.

I went backwards when I went from Cisco to HouseCanary. Not a good idea. I still feel like I’m underpaid for what I do.

I would def work that into your resume and verbal pitch. Maybe not mention the money numbers in your resume, but getting title promotions and raises internally is generally considered A Good Thing.

I'm filling out an application for which there are three reference slots available. *Which of these people should I list?* I'm including nature of relationship, duration of relationship, and age difference (bc it correlates to general professional experience)
1. Direct supervisor at my most recent job. Known for 4 years. Younger than me.
2. VP of HR at my most recent job &amp; frequent collaborator. Known for 4 years. 15 years older than me.
3. Landlord for my most recent company who had to work with me a lot in my capacity as Facilities Manager, since I was the main contact at our company for day-to-day property issues. Known for 3 years. 10 years older than me.
4. Executive director of makerspace that I've been a member of for 7 years, who I've worked with in a variety of Board/administrative capacities; I've also ran programs, represented the org at community events, an volunteered in assorted roles. Known for 7 years. 10 years older than me.

Make sure to ask your references for permission first and give them a heads up when a call is incoming
