Hi Anyone uses Epsagon for distributed tracing and monitoring ? I got a notice they are closing down ?
r
You did?! We use it extensively. They were bought by Cisco and I got a note to say the engineering team were working on a 'Cisco product' but I took that to mean they were integrating it into Cisco's portfolio.
Can you share the notice you received?
j
I just had a demo with Lumigo, seems it has potential but Epsagon looks good. Are there any others you would recommend for serverless monitoring and distributed tracing?
That’s such a selfish thing to do. Wow
What’s the closest competitor?
s
yes it seems cisco just qcquired and closed it
epsagon is such a good solution and the price is also perfect
they allow us unlimited users for a flat 120$ pm 😞
and it was 1m+ traces i think
j
Datadog?
s
all these datadog and newrelic etc are expensive and charge per user as per my earlier survey
epsagon was so much suited for serverless ecosystem, we have many complex lambda triggers and they just worked. Closest I did poc earlier with Thundra
they has similar pricing, but feature was not that as per epsagon
j
Lumigo is built for serverless
but they are pre-series A so the product is not amazing yet
s
but the pain is our whole team of 5 devs are trained to use it and now we have to learn something new, setup new slack triggers etc
now it seems I have to explore 😛 , if seed builts something similar I am willing to pay extra 😛 , they already have the lambda issues, just add tracing 😄
j
Lumigo is probably what you’re looking for
s
yeah pricing is similar I have to ask for demo, but should be similar, as I saw they have some plugins for serverless (we still use SLS)
j
I had the demo this morning and it’s good if you are using python or nodejs as they can do the tracing with a lambda layer. Unfortunately they are still working on Golang lambda layer so I cannot take advantage of the auto-tracing feature.
s
But one problem while doing these migration will be, if we are using Seed (or serverless pro), then we can only epsagon or lumigo at a time. As they both create some subscription on cloudwatch logs. And one is used by seed. So I have to do a complete separate poc, but with serverless i can do, but no option it seems, I will just miss epsagon, they even detected anomaly in system and detected a infinite loop in event bridge 😞 . And luckily we use python, you can check Thundra also, they also have a very good sales and customer success team. Only reason i did not go with them was 1. Epsagon had a free form cloudwatch search inbult 2. also I could setup indexs on tracing fields (which passes from one service to another) and put alerts on that, in our earlier days it helped us solve many bugs
j
Time to learn the Elastic stack?
s
Personal feel is its in general for logging and might be costly to setup. And currently no idea about further tool chains, as the backend has lot of async code and one service to another via sqs, sns , buses etc, we need specialized tools for proper monitoring
we have a elastic cluster in aws, but cost is ~600$pm
ö
Thundra, New Relic, Dashboard
s
New Relic was costly. Thundra as per I remember it was flat priced
r
Just had it confirmed from Ran Ribanzaft - CTO/cofounder that this is the case.
Hi Ross, yes unfortunately that's the case. It applies to everyone, so you should have around 30 days more until we close it.
crazy
j
These guys are sellouts lol
Tbf $500m
s
everyone will be with that money 😄
a
WTH!!
We are in love with Epsagon for so much time.
We used Lumigo but the refresh rate for the logs was too high.
Lumigo UI and features are almost 1:1 with Epsagon.
j
Too low or too high? As in, they are taking too long to appear?
I’ve noticed I cannot see logs yet
a
@Joe Kendal sorry, too long to appear.
r
An outrageous breach of customer trust. I told Ran that, he's offered to recommend alternatives! What a bizarre world - company builds great product, company gets bought, product is shutdown, founder of company will recommend competitors to help the transition
a
Epsagon is near real time logging.
j
@Adrián Mouly Yep, that is definitely the case for me too. Very problematic
Maybe it is due to a flood of new users?
a
@Ross Coundon can’t believe this… been a customer in my 2 last jobs, just because it was a great product. I’ve been recommending this stuff for years.
s
But they are honest at least, just before their acquisition announcement I emailed them for yearly contract, but surprisingly they told to be on monthly as it will be cheaper for us, now makes sense
r
Likewise
a
@Joe Kendal I used it at the beginning of the year, when joined a new job, we tested Lumigo and Epsagon.
s
I also recommended this to 2 of my friends companies and one implemented also 🤐
a
I’m angry right now.
r
Me too
j
Ah, that is terrible then. Monitoring should have realtime alerts
r
Copy code
Hi Ross, I'm truly sorry for that again. This is a decision that was made recently and we could not change it unfortunately..

I'm happy to personally help and suggest alternatives to smooth the transition
j
We need an SST construct that automatically configures CloudWatch Alarms, X-ray tracing etc.
a
@Sourav Sarkar not going to recommend anything else in my life… or maybe yes, but not with this level of fanaticism.
@Ross Coundon we spent time figuring out integration with SST recently 🤦‍♂️ .
j
Deploys once, self-hosted in your AWS account, using Lambda layers
s

---> i saw there are github projects who do these even with slack integration, but I doubt the quality will be like a enterprise grade product, I specifically liked their UI for post mortem bugs
j
Slack should be a prop as well
r
Anyone checked out https://www.thundra.io/apm ?
s
I tried long ago
+ Price is similar to epsagon + Great sales and support team + has some features like remote debugging plugins missing -->
1. lacked some search capabilities and the indexing capabilities 2. also that time the cloudwatch search was not good
I think i have to reach out to them again if lumigo is not good
r
that's useful, thanks.
I played with what became sidekick a long time ago
s
I just wonder if similar fate happens with some low code tools I use, if salesforce / servicenow acquires retool and shuts down, i will literally be fired 😛

From Ran

From what I've heard among customers in the past and my evaluation I would go with Thundra. My impressions were that it is a more mature solution, that offer wider features and functionality.
There's also datadog but it's crazy expensive..
j
This is unfortunate, we reached out talking about integrating with SST and found that they’ve moved on and that the integration won’t be relevant anymore.
a
@Jay worst news ever, my CTO is not happy with this.
We rely a lot in Epsagon.
j
Yeah it’s really unexpected because this was a sizable acquisition. At the very least it should’ve been some sort of integration into Cisco’s other products.
a
Yeah.
It’s weird that they bought it and let go the client base.
That worth a lot of money.
Maybe Cisco has bigger plans for that team… I mean, I don’t get it if not.
Not sure how many customers they have, but I don’t think are few…
Or maybe the profit wasn’t good enough for Cisco and they bought it just for the tech / know how?
j
Yeah really strange that it happened so fast. I wonder if there’s more to the story.
r
I was contacted by Nitzan Shapiro and Ran Ribanzaft who have both offered to help with the migration. Basically contracts are being honoured and so we're okay until March 2022. Both have apologised but neither has really shed any light on why. I'm going to try to find out more.
g
Lucky that we went with Lumigo I suppose.
a
@Guy Shechter lucky you, we tried it and paid for it for 3 months… and then we switch back to Epsagon.
Too bad 😞
Lumigo es still to update the cloud watch logs, do you have that issue too @Guy Shechter?
Epsagon is near real-time.
r
Received this from Epsagon today! Hi Ross! Hope you are doing well. We wanted to clarify on the future of the Epsagon platform and share with you the latest news. The Epsagon platform will remain fully operational for our customers, free of charge, capped by our Professional Tier (10M/month). We will release an official announcement very soon.
j
Oh so they aren’t shutting down?
a
This is crazy.
The sent email saying they are shutting down.
Anyway, we are going to meet with Lumigo and Thundra next week.
r
I think someone in the Cisco PR department has had a word
a
They are letting go a huge client base.
s
got same communication, they are saying till 10M traces its free, we are far below that limit at this time !
