Hey everyone, after evaluating the discussion in this thread we've decided to migrate the community over to Discord. As our community continues to rapidly grow, Discord offers us a better setup to enable all the things we want to do together: • They're continuously shipping features that make sense for communities like ours and Slack has shown they are not interested in supporting this use case • A pricing model that makes sense for open communities • Other major open source projects have been consolidating there - including projects that SST uses/integrates with • We're excited to take advantage of features like events, voice channels, etc to improve what we already have going Our Discord server is not ready yet but we'll be setting things up over the next few weeks and will invite everyone after.

Yeah I'll be the first to admit that Discord feels more complicated than Slack. But they just seem so much more aligned with our use case. It's more community oriented and less about like a workspace for a "company".
I wish Slack had embraced the community use case more.

Yeah, to provide some context, we want to make sure every single question is answered, and every reply is followed up on. For example, imagine @thdxr posted a question in #help:
@thdx: how do I convert my TS project to JS?
This is easy for me to track b/c I now have an unread message in #help and I’d respond in the thread:
@Frank: why do you want to do that? Can you share your use case?
Now if @thdxr reply in the thread, it doesn’t show for me that there is an unread message in #help. Slack tracks new thread messages under the Threads tab (shown in screenshot), but the first 5-10 messages get marked as soon as I open the tab, and more messages are marked as read as I scroll. If I navigate away from this page; if I open up a thread and hit back; if I hit on a slack notification; if Slack installs an update and refreshes the page; un-replied messages are lost. In Discord, every ongoing thread shows up as a mini channel on the left. This gives us the confidence to make sure nothing slips through the crack. ^ Sorry for the rant, guys, I was just depressed. But no more 😁
t
^ so looking forward to this feature
also wtf I would NEVER ask a question like that
j
It's
@thdx
apparently.
t
that dummy
a
there’ll be some discord initially but we’ll be sure to not seem to be slacking. I just love puns! 😂
t
you're banned
a
lol! who’ll write dreamy rants in the community? 😂
m
good idea. Discord is better for community/hobby things. Slack is better for professional things imo, because a user can have a distinct profile within each Slack channel - which is highly useful so I am not
xxxCryptoVapeGodxxx
in my work conversations
t
You can also change your profile per server in discord, we actually encourage that
m
i did not know that until this second.. that will come in handy
t
It's a bit hidden
a
I’m a Discord pro from my gaming days lol! 😂
forced everyone to listen to the music that I preferred. 😂
m
maybe make a tango workflow showing how to do it? (shameless plug for my place of work) https://www.producthunt.com/posts/tango-2-0
a
That’s an interesting product you got! 👏
t
Damn that's cool
m
thanks. I joined after about 14 months at AWS accumulated frustration with how bad console documentation is, and saw this as an opportunity to make very good console documentation
a
yeah, the console is shit! I really don’t open it unless I’ve to deal with billing.
m
i wrote a small part of it. it was the worst experience of my professional life
and that includes getting fired twice
a
damn! you should have received a medal to bear writing that. 😂
k
looking forward to the move. i only have slack open for this community but everything else is in discord!
