is anyone using vtl with appsync here?

Not yet, but I've been wanting to test out VTL in my APIG REST API (DDB proxy), but have been intimidated by how much more work it is than using Lambda

I am @thdxr... Biggest issue is I had to write a whole bunch of custom code in my stack to be able to inject variables into the vtl... For example if I was doing a batch write and needed the table name of multiple tables in the vtl
