I'll answer from perspective of "fractional growth lead" (though I'm not exactly that, but could be interpreted as such in some contexts) which in many ways is similar... 1. Yes. This is no different from finding PMF. Have to be very honest about where you can be a force multiplier and then test out whether your expertise - or how you talk about the kinds of things you can help teams with - match the needs/problems of teams as they see it. Just has to do a lot with being very specific about what you solve and for whom. 2. Was being asked the same Qs again and again (literally conversations with 100+ startups) which then told me this is a giant unmet need (more on this in next response). 3. Started out mentoring at various accelerators which is where I discovered everyone (at a given stage) has similar issues. I then quit my full time gig to do this. I look at it as an experiment for now. (not opposed to going back to full time)

Thanks @Anuj Adhiya I am exploring this idea and was putting together my operating manual on how to pitch/ scale this. Your insights are helpful

1. I didn't start as a Fractional CMO, started solving problems for SaaS companies as a consultant. Fractional CMO came along the way. 2. There won't be any luck here. You find right prospects (ICP) and sell to them. All my Fractional CMO work came through references after I consulted more than 50 SaaS companies. Most early stage founder refer you. 3. I did this full time from day one. It's very difficult to manage this with a full time job. Remember, you need to always build pipeline, personal brand, network and execute really well. Companies churn faster than they sign. I was fired in 2 weeks from a company that didn't give me any reason (They took 9 months to evaluate after multiple plans/strategies). Everyone wants results faster especially from Marketers.
