by 2020 we'll have under display cameras - it's sort of inevitable and we're going to see first prototypes this year itself!

thatโ€™s where the quest would end I assume.

Technology doesn't have an end. After the under display camera is present, they would try to keep increasing the size of the in display fingerprint scanner till it covers the entire screen. That will be followed by porting these into different form factors like the folding screens. There will always be something next to look forward to. Another thind would be true wireless charging where you would just have to be in the viscinity to charge your phone. There will always be improvements in this space.

I have already seen a in-display camera in some leaked video. I'll search for the link in my browser history.

Agreed. Iโ€™m still curios to know other possible reason to tweak the camera setup so much, if there are any.

I think having the same camera unit for both front-end and back-end is another reason behind a lot of innovation in this space. A lot of smaller manufacturers use multi-camera, high-res setup in front (selfie cam) and back camera is always a decisive factor in smartphone purchase - so if by using some mechanism, a single unit can serve both function it seems like a win-win for both parties.

@dry-waitress-7852 @crooked-daybreak-310 In-display is already a prototype and is even officially announced it seems. Just found the video https://twitter.com/oppo/status/1135393369113280512/video/1
