Does anyone have a dual monitor setup? Need more screen real estate. What's your setup like? And curious to also know how you organize windows across the screens.
s
Yes. I do. This is how my setup looks like. I keep two separate browser instances open on both screens.

This is mine. I like to keep all current windows visible so I use 32" 4k monitors . Keep the chat/mail/notes/regular browsing windows on left and right sides and code/shell/related browsing windows towards the middle.

@creamy-sundown-74328 - what’s the black item on the floor for?
c
It’s a planter, repurposed as a foot rest :p

Cool. Was wondering if it’s for some foot exercise while standing

My setup. I use a tiling window manager (i3) that automatically resizes windows to maximise them to the extent possible. And I use 10 virtual desktops - each mapped to a specific function: • 1 is mapped to terminals • 2 is mapped to chat programs (slack, mattermost, discord, etc.) • 3 is mapped to personal chrome browser profile • 4 is mapped to code editor (emacs) • 10 is mapped to music player • and so on. Switching to them is Cmd-1, Cmd-2, etc. 1 thru 5 are on my left monitor and 6 thru 10 are on my right monitor. i3 with some configuration automatically opens applications on their designated workspace - so I don't have to move things around every time. I've also optimised the pairing to handle common usage profiles e.g. browser and code editor side by side while coding, browser and chat side by side when attending calls, etc.

Damn that keyboard will give chills to even a hitman! 😆

@swift-dinner-85530 What are the monitor dimensions? @creamy-sundown-74328 That's a neat setup! Few questions • Aren;t the 32" monitors too big? • What about the black border in the middle? Does it annoy you? Did you get used to it?
@helpful-gigabyte-47939 That's a nice setup! • What are the monitor sizes? • What do you mean by virtual desktops? Do you avoid alt-tab completely? • What keyboard?
c
@broad-camera-13514 I got used to the size as well as the middle border pretty quickly. The window placement helps with the size as well since by keeping the the things that i look at most during the day on the middle, I don’t have to move my head much. Although the setup has evolved a bit from the above picture (it’s a few months old). In the current setup I also have my personal laptop on the side so i can switch between office and personal systems easily and create a specific boundary between them
This is how it looks like now, a bit messier than earlier :p

What are the monitor sizes?
24" The monitor mounting arm can not take a bigger monitor because of extension limitations. But this is plenty for me.
What do you mean by virtual desktops? Do you avoid alt-tab completely?
Correct, no Alt-Tab cycling needed. Just Cmd-<num> to switch to desktop containing whatever application I need to get to. I get distracted easily, so I like to keep the browser and chat applications hidden away unless I really need it. :-)
What keyboard?
Ergodox EZ

@creamy-sundown-74328 Makes sense. Can get used to it. I have a 27" and this is how my setup looks. I initially had 2 27'' but hated the middle border and got a bit of nausea given the large surface area and moving parts (quickly returned it in a day). Thinking of getting one now since my laptop screen is too small. This is how my setup looks like btw. I would honestly just be happy with a screen the height of a 27" and shaped like a square on the right side. Also what's the advantage of a 4K display? I have a 2K one
@helpful-gigabyte-47939 Ah 24" can be ideal. I already have a 27" and I want something of the same height. @helpful-gigabyte-47939 Nice! I'll look into this in windows Ah figured! I was thinking of getting the ergodox and placing a magic trackpad in between. How much did you pay (fees + customs)?
c
@broad-camera-13514 4k vs 2k basically more screen space. Or can get better visual fidelity even if you want to don’t use it in 4k mode.

@broad-camera-13514 I think I paid 30% over the price for customs and handling but it has been almost 2 years now. Some people keep one monitor oriented vertically for their code editors (more lines!), but I never got used to that and reverted back to both monitors oriented horizontally.
b
Amit that's pretty cheap haha. I've ended up with 42 and 72% customs duty

I keep switching between dual monitors (27" and 22" both 1080p) and just a single 27" monitor. Some days I just can't get work done on dual setups, and some days I absolutely need them. I don't really know why, but I find I am "generally" more productive with a single monitor setup. Been going back and forth since over 5 years now, maybe switching to a 27" 4k or 32" 4k would help me finally make up my mind 🙈
b
I'm thinking of getting one more 27", so it will be dual 27" . Currently have 3 monitors • 15.6" laptop • 27" 2K monitor • 24" 1080p (vertical) ppi on 1080p is too less which is annoying. 2K is the minimum
