Reviews on OnePlus phones? I am planing to buy OnePlus Nord 2 (12 GB RAM, 256 ROM) (35k) I have never used One Plus phones before. Any phone recommendation in the same price range? All I am looking for is durability, performance and a good camera.

using 6T for 3 years now, solid stuff for android folks
k
Good phone for the price. Also you'll love warp charging.
f
I'm a long time OnePlus user, if you plan to buy Nord 2 for stock Android-like experience, be prepared to be disappointed in coming months.

Been using OnePlus 6 for 2.5 years. Good phone but do note that OnePlus peaked with their 7 series. Ever since then the company has been in a state of steady decline. They started jacking up the prices and have started bundling more and more adware into Indian variants. Once Carl Pei left they eventually replaced OxygenOS with ColorOS. So be prepared for more adware via software updates in the future. I used to be a huge OnePlus fan but my next phone is a going to be a Xiaomi something and I'll just flash a custom ROM like Lineage on top

Sad reality is that there's no good Stock Android phone available in Indian market now. Pixel 6 is rumoured to not release in India. As far as custom ROMs are concerned, Google's SafetyNet checks are increasingly making custom ROMs irrelevant. Eg; UPI apps won't work (even if your ROM is unrooted), Netflix, Prime Video etc won't stream at full resolution.

Pixel 5A has been announced for US and Japan few weeks ago. India release is rumoured to be at the same time as 4A last year (I.e. September - October)
As Kushal and TJ pointed out, I would either take my chances by waiting for pixel 5A or go for pixel 4A. Have used pixel 2 for 3 years and it was solid.

Had been getting all I wanted from my OP5 but the charging port was getting wonky and my daughter pushed it one day and volume key got stuck…so upgraded to OP Nord 2 and have been liking it. Mind you I was ALREADY happy with OP5, my usage is heavy but mostly light activities like browsing, reddit, twitter etc and the Nord 2 has been a definite improvment. Camera is neat and that 65W charger is too good.
Note that after looking at how bad OP9 was I was planning to move away from OP and the OP Nord 2 was timely.
For equivalents - looks like Motorola Edge 20 is reviewing very favourably and has (edit: near?) stock android, great screen
s
Been using OP 8T for a while; Things I like: • Warp charging • Good speakers • Camera is okay (works for me) • Chrome browsing and normal social media apps Things I don't like: • Battery is getting drained easily (max 12-15hrs on heavy usage, 120hz screen uses battery even more)
f
@silly-train-46493 Check your battery health using OnePlus Diagnostics App https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/oneplus-ltd/oneplus-diagnostic/ If it is bad then you can get it replaced. Infact, my local OnePlus store told they have an offer going on and they'll replace the battery for free. Only service charges will apply
d
Go for 9r, if you can.
d
@damp-memory-53739 any reasons vs Nord 2? 9r has only 2 5g bands. Camera is bad in 9r and Nord 2 camera is one of the best in OP phones
f
Yep. 9R is a bad investment for the long term. If you get an expensive phone you atleast expect it to last 3-4 years.

I bought 9r just after the launch and never had any issues be it gaming, heating or anything else, Camera, I don't have anything to benchmark but it is decent enough for my use, front camera and microphone is good for daily meetings and quick sync..
s
I am waiting for Asus Zenfone 8, as i prefer compact phone, now even google has stopped making compact phone, 4a was their last. Hoping that Zenfone 8 launches in India at competitive price.

How do Pixel 4A and OnePlus Nord 2 compare againsrt each other?
r
I would go with pixel 4a in that budget. Reason being Pixel is more reliable on the camera side of things. I am in the mode of buying a new phone as well, and I was watching reviews. Even OnePlus 9 fails to take decent photos at times. iPhone, Samsung high-end series (S20, S21) and Pixel are the only ones with reliable camera (Reliable camera = when you take a photo, you can be sure it is good). Pixel is decently durable as well, my current pixel 2 XL is in its 4th year.
s
So does that mean that the megapixels of the camera has little to do with the image quality? Pixel 4A is 12MP while Nord 2 is 50MP I am also bothered about RAM. 4A is 6GB whereas Nord 2 stands at 12GB Should I just ignore the specs? My heart says Pixel but the mind says Nord 2. 😆
f
Higher megapixels does not mean better images. iPhones remained on 8 mp cameras for years, while iPhone 12 Pro has 12 mp primary sensor.
d
iPhone, S21, Pixel are the main camera power houses. It's all about the processing than the lens
r
4A is 6GB whereas Nord 2 stands at 12GB
Yes, camera doesn’t depend on mega pixels. RAM is a legit concern. Since both Pixel and OP is Android, there is no way Pixel can optimize their system to cover for 50% less RAM. OP clearly wins here. But 6GB may be enough if you don’t play heavy games. Though my Pixel 2XL with 4GB of RAM has started giving me problems with 154 user apps installed when I do heavy multitasking. But it could be because my phone is very “used”. IDK.
d
@sticky-sandwich-47614 Nord 2 camera is good. But it will not even be close to pixel. 6GB is more than enough RAM and Pixel is all about optimized software running on ok hardware.
@rough-autumn-89795 OP 6GB variants perform about same 8GB+. 12GB is definitely not needed.

6GB ram is more than enough for a smartphone today, I wouldn't be worried about it. Pixel 4A (or wait for 5A if you can) > Nord
s
Yeah, I think Pixel 4A would be a nice choice at this moment. I don't think if 5G is a real deal breaker.
f
Do consider post purchase service availability. From what I've heard, Google is notorious for poor customer service in India 😅

Just bought Pixel 4a and then reading this thread. 😀
s
What do you reckon @bumpy-television-13007? 😆 I am still undecided by the way. I am not sure if 5G is a deal breaker. I am intending to keep the phone for at least 4 years. And @faint-energy-11966's comment that Google has a poor customer service worries me as well.
b
@sticky-sandwich-47614 So I am a One plus 6 user. Still going strong with it. Whether it be camera, gaming, or just browsing. I didn’t take the Pixel 4a for me personally. I took it for my wife. Main reason was the camera of Pixel 4a. But once I saw the phone and used it, it felt butter smooth (no prior experience with Pixels). It’s not just the camera, the pure android feedback is wonderful. Now I have my eyes on Pixel 6 as well, for me. Now coming to customer service, yes it might be hard to find screen spares or do other repairs. Personally I don’t pay it that much attention. In the lifetime of a phone, you may goto the customer care 2-3 times max. There are enough mobile service shops to get any phone repaired anyway, So I will figure something out. The only thing that bothers me is that is no good android choices these days. Oneplus 9 series doesn’t feel worth all my money. Samsung phones are sluggish except the Note series. So those are my thoughts 😄
