This is a flawed poll because it only allows me to select one option.

^^ I have redundant backups (cloud storage + cloud backup + local)
m
Makes sense. The plugin didn’t have an option for multiple choices though 😅

How many do a code backup in multiple places? I've almost never done anything more than a git push. Scary if GitHub goes down or I get locked out 😀
m
@best-animal-3294 I did not backup my code outside github until recently. Now I back ip up to backblaze (excluding node_modules and .git)

I’m curious to know what kind of data you guys backup? Most of my data like Code, Financials, Documents, Passwords, Emails etc. are all on cloud services. I do have backup strategies in place for my apps database but I believe that’s not what we are discussing here.
m
@witty-gigabyte-47737 I used to have most of the crucial things in google drive, docs, etc. Had a nightmare that I got locked out of my google account and lost everything. Started setting up backblaze the next day (still not done. I need to have well organized local copies of all the documents so they get backup up to backblaze)

@melodic-jordan-81418 how are you planning to create contingency for email (which I’m presuming you must be using Gmail) in such scenarios?
m
Good point! I don’t have a plan for that yet and yes I’m using gmail. Any suggestions?
l
@melodic-jordan-81418 One recommendation for email backup is to use a custom domain + Google Apps (so incase you get locked out, you can switch) and have a secondary email address - say outlook or anything else, in which you have set your Google email to auto forward all emails to.
s
@loud-glass-33663 is there any doc/tutorial that I could follow to enable a backup email address for forwarding?
d
Another strategy is to use an email backup app: https://thehorcrux.com/about/ (Mac) https://www.mailstore.com/ (Windows) Disclaimer: I'm the developer of the first link.

Although the intent is right and many people pursue it (https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/), the sad reality is that, ecosystems like Google and Apple make it really convenient at affordable prices. As developers, we may spend time on it but anyone else won’t. Coming back to the point, having multiple backups for data is important. I try to have one offline backup such as HDD for stuff other than code and email. For very critical items such as passwords, notes I have them encrypted and securely backed up in 3 services. Since it is encrypted by my offline key, it doesn’t matter where I back it up.

Lots of people talking aboit backblaze here. How is it compared to Google Drive? I am also planning to migrate out of the google ecosystem but I don't know which service to go for. There's pcloud, proton drive, etc.
m
@faint-energy-11966 backblaze is purely a cloud backup (not storage) service. This means you can’t manually upload files to backblaze and expect them to stay. It basically backs up your entire local hard drive, and keeps it in sync. If you delete a file locally, it will be deleted from backblaze too. It keeps a 30-day (longer if you pay more) version history of your deleted files, and you can decide to persist certain snapshots of your files forever (at additional storage price)

They also have a cloud storage solution called B2 which is an alternative to aws s3
f
Oh got it. So, it's more like a full archiving solution that you can use to restore all your data if your device ever gets lost or damaged.
m
1TB ondrive storage which is part of my O365 family plan (annual subscription).
