Well, time to stop being lazy and migrate out of Google ecosystem. Suggestions please. What services are you guys using for Email, Cloud Storage, Calendar, etc.? https://support.google.com/drive/thread/127021326/google-has-locked-my-account-for-sharing-a-historical-archive-they-labeled-as-terrorist-activity?hl=en

Unpopular opinion with context: I don’t use Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. I am an avid user of LinkedIn for professional reasons and simply cannot go away from it. I’ve been self hosting my email and storage for several years. Coming to Google, I’ve tried twice to move away and the main reasons to stay back: • Convenience - Not just me but the entire family. YT Kids, YT Premium, SSO for many services, Android (especially baby photos), sharing with extended family. Family uses shared storage • Cost - The ROI on a 2TB storage across photos, files, docs is way too high. • Other users - Family shares storage, premium accounts. Getting them to use Vanced, custom email apps, sync photos, etc is too painful to teach. At the end of the day I do use Google, but I enable all privacy settings that Google/LI will expose. I use pi-hole to avoid trackers and have browser extensions that will kill fingerprinting (as much as possible). Getting rid of Google completely for a family is just not worth the time.

@best-animal-3294 how has your experience with self hosting your email been? I'm always hesitant of self hosting critical stuff like email as it comes with the unnecessary overhead of managing the mail server.

@witty-answer-12530 Spot on. Hosting an email service to learn new things and as a hobby is great. Depending on your luck you could be spending way too much time on: • reputation management • Cost optimization • Backups • Upgrades • Storage management • Security

Not worth it in my opinion if you got better things to do in life

Balaji wrote about it, the helm is solving this problem https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1420567062104088582 However, lot of effort/pain + time or a 300-500$ subscription can solve this, choose your battles
His account was re-enabled by a community manager 7hrs ago too But, yes they will def become more evil in next 3-5-10 years, plan for it

If you are looking just to have backup / redundancy, a friend posted some ideas he has setup for himself: https://twitter.com/NGKabra/status/1358820146538684417?s=20 Agree with Arif that doing your own email especially if you depend on it is risky. When we tried it, we had all sorts of issues with reputation and trying to get hotmail (then) to accept the email. Then there was spam and other crap. Better things to do with your life. The other thing to remember (for people on the fence about this) that while these Google blocked my services thing is scary and jarring, it happens to a very small fraction of users. 99.99999% people will never face this. While it may still happen to you, the probability is tiny (if you are a normal user) and you should also consider investing the time and money on this vis-a-vis the probability of it happening to you. (But in the end, only the paranoid survive. So YMMV) 🙃
