Is there a way to create a truly separate instance of an app in macOS? Such that even preferences of those two instances are isolated of each other? Context: I recently got new MBP 2021, and obviously not every tool I use is available on Apple Silicon, so I’m working with iTerm2 (which is run natively), and built-in Terminal (which uses Rosetta), but I’d like to use iTerm2 for both.
I know one can create multiple profiles within iterm2 (along with custom startup commands), but it tends to be unpredictable at times given how binaries that run in arm64 mode vs Rosetta mode identify architecture.

Copy paste the app again in Applications and name it something else

Yes, except that it won’t create separate preferences. 😄
v
Why not? It creates a separate folder in both Apps and Home
You can change the plist file to specifically set a different file.
I'll double check once I'm at the desk. It's been a while I did this
I did this Skype when testing out Krisp in very early days

So while it won’t work for every app (I’m talking about duplication of app’s
Application Support
folder), I figured that iTerm2 supports loading preferences from a specific directory for each profile. However, a much simpler route is to just run
arch -x86_64 /usr/local/bin/zsh
as start-up command in a profile and then it ends up opening Rosetta mode. 🙂
