probably the oldest question in remote work but what do folks use to create invoices nowadays ?
I have been using one or the other web based tools that I rarely change but it always seems weird that I haven't found any tool yet to have ready made templates etc and have to enter details everytime 😫
did find some good ones but they either had some strings attached or too pricey for something this simple

zoho's tool looks cool although it much more involved that a simple invoice generator, for example, lately I have been using just this https://invoicetemplate.co/free-invoice-template

I use Google Sheets and export as pdf since I have only 1 invoice per month (rarely 2 in a month). Can customise as you like easily. Not useful if you have lots of invoices.

Zoho Invoice is good. If you have the same customers, it saves a whole bunch of data entry everytime. Plus it will create GST compliant invoices for you. Plus ofcourse other cool features like scheduled invoices, etc. are all free. I'd recommend it. It takes about 15m to setup and get familiar with it - but it works. Been using it for 5+ years now.

I use a mix of Google Sheets (just duplicate tabs for new invoices), FreeInvoiceBuilder, and Refrens. My biggest worry when using tools for invoices is the platform using client data for cold outreach/upsell.

I am new to this so this might sound like a dumb question but Do people with consultant contract need to generate invoices even if the client doesn't ask for it? How it is useful?

@proud-dawn-75745 Not really required unless your CA asks for it at the end of the year. I had some clients who I did not need to raise an invoice for -- and at the end of the year, I just made invoices in Google docs and shared with my CA to make his life easier.

Got it. Thanks 🙌

thanks everyone for responses, looks like there are no simple invoice builder which just lets you create invoices and save templates, without any frills like time tracker ng, inbuilt payments etc
I think I found one a long time back that did exactly what I was looking for but that would create really ugly looking invoices and was limited to saving just one template in free, and too pricey for the value it offered
which begs the question, should I just make a new invoice builder tool focused on simplicity 😂 ? other than templates and good looking invoice designs, is there anything else that other invoice tools are missing that folks here would like to have ?

Zoho Invoice is awesome, takes a few mins to setup but then one can do really cool stuff with it. Generate reports and json for direct GST return filing.
