Has anyone renewed their passport recently? I have a few queries regarding police verification for passport renewal. Background: 1. My passport expires in the next 2 months. 2. I'm changing my address from one state to another. Questions: 1. Does police verification happen for passport renewal? 2. If yes, does it happen before or after the appointment in passport seva kendra. Would love to hear from folks who've had a similar experience.

1. Yes. It will be in your case. Usually if address and all other details are the same, Police Verification is skipped. But in your case, it will mostly happen. 2. After appointment always. Once they approve the renewal, your file goes to the police station. This is for a normal passport renewal. For Tatkal, procedure is different and PV may happen after you even receive the passport.

I recently went through the renewal process my and my mother's passport. The Police Verification happens after appointment at PSK. Even though the address did not change, the Police Verification happened in both the cases. In my case, I received my passport after PV, whereas in my mother's case the PV happened after receiving the new passport. There are lot of control points that can trigger the PV.

If you are not present at the address then you may get a call from the police itself and he will ask when you will be available or he may ask you to visit the police station. In my case, I got a call and he came the next day.

It is better to stay at the address during the Police Verification. If you miss, better to go to the Police Station asap and explain situation. If they send an adverse report, it becomes really problematic. Been through that, and the govt officials were not at all helpful. In my case, the Passport Office was around 150kms away, so had to make two round trips 😣 But yes, they do call before making the visit.
