I recently received feedback that I have excellent written communication but my verbal skills are lacking for a senior developer. I suspect this is the byproduct of remote and async work for the past 2 years. I can work on improving my technical skills but what steps can I take to get better at verbal communication at work?

Now that things are going back to "normal" (fingers crossed) try attending meetups, talking to any keynote/invited speakers (ask them questions, strike up tech conversations, ask them to explain things and observe how they do it, but only do this if the topic genuinely interests you). This one may not be for everyone, try giving talks yourself, these may not be full fledged ones, maybe just 5 minute lightning talks at events/meetups. The feedback about you itself seems a little incomplete or lackadaisical, is it that you are not able to articulate? or is it that it is something specific, like system design that you are not able to explain? could it be that you are not able to mentor/guide juniors? Try to narrow down the area to what specific kind of communication is lacking.

Talk to your juniors more often about their problems, aspirations, what they need help with etc. First few will be slightly awkward or go all over the place. Over time(can take months), try to organise and make the conversation more fruitful+positive Once you gain some more confidence, talk to your seniors about how to grow devs in your team, improve code/process quality, and upcoming major tech problems to solve.

1. be genuinely curious to ask questions to others including personal and professional so you can get conversational and improve your speaking skills 2. join a club like Toastmasters or something local/online as it fits you 3. solicit feedback on where your current skills are lacking e.g. is it in communicating the big picture or in setting expectations to juniors or not articulating what you are currently doing etc..

Above suggestions make a lot of sense and would improve your comfort and confidence level in communicating to any type of audience. Workplace feedback can be a lot contextual, and cultural. So would encourage you to speak with others and identify specific instances where your teammates felt lacking. This should help you identify which of the ideas suggested above help you improve. You could combine their feedback with your own personal aspirations and work towards it. Good Luck :)
