Hi Tribe, Looking for your advise for a switch in my career. I'm pretty sure you must have come across people switching to Tech and I'm one of them. This will be a minute or two read but your advice would be really appreciated. Work Experiences: 1. Global customer service, retention, and satisfaction experience. 2. Finance and account experience with Cash Application, Account Receivable, Order to Cash. 3. Digital marketing, content writing, content strategy, content management, social media management and marketing, blogging, WordPress CMS, Google AdWords, SEO experience. 4. Currently, I'm with IT, working as an administrator with basic troubleshoot. I want to make a switch to a tech role where I can earn a stable income. I’m willing to learn and grow my career from scratch but I want to stick to one career path in the long run. Given my past work experience what are some roles I can transition to and how do I go about finding the right jobs? Is there anything I can do or learn on my own time to help improve my chances of getting a job?

Hey Ronit , It depends on your interests in tech. If you are interested in moving towards front-end developer role. Check out this road to web developer guide. https://github.com/qiinori/A-Path-To-Web-Developer

Hi Ali, Ive glanced at the guide, I was thinking may be Devops would be a good transition for me, any thoughts?

Devops is highly specific, specialized, broad and vast set of tools and the original devops principles are hardly seen. I really wouldn't recommend unless you like diving deep into things you've never tried before at frequent intervals

Given your background with customer serice, digital marketing etc how about a Product role? It's still a technical role but doesn't required programming

@modern-table-48211 Thanks for your response. Any thoughts where should I begin with in terms of transition
@faint-energy-11966 Thanks for your response. It sure looks as a career path. Any thoughts of transition to Tech from my current role
@green-tiger-63296 Thanks Mate. I'll surely go through it

Look at https://roadmap.sh/devops and start reading up. From this, here's what I think you should do: • learn a programming language. Any will do, python is good to start. You need to know enough to write small scripts, not just hello world • learn to live in terminal: practice how to create files/directories, understand unix permission model (if I ask what does 644 or rwx-w--w- means you should be able to tell me) • shell scripting is good to have • learn about managing servers: how to install an OS, how to install software (pick any distro, I would recommend Ubuntu. Others the commands will differ, the principles will be the same) • learn about how build, run software. Pick any open source software, or build your own, and learn how to package it to deploy. Write small shell scripts to make the 5 things you have to do always in to a script executable script • learn about containers ("docker" is a tool, containers is the principle). Learn how to package this app you built into a container • learn about CI/CD principles. Understand the principles. Tools like Jenkins/Gitlab/Github actions will come naturally. Practice how to build your app using CI principles. Then practice how to deploy them using CD. • Understand how networking works. You don't have to go deep into the kernel level. At the minimum, you need to know about Subnets, routing, interfaces, ports • Understand OS concepts: understand the Linux folder hierarchy. if someone asks you where the logs are, or how to get a app to run on startup, you should be able to explain these • If you're going to pick up Cloud Skills: pick a Cloud, any cloud. Principle matters, implementation will come from reading the docs • Understand fundamental pillars of cloud: IAM, Virtual networking • build something in the cloud. Maybe a manually deploy that app you built onto a cloud VM • learn some infra as code to automatically do these. @bitter-jelly-24586

Hi, If you are willing to start from scratch as a SDE-1, I would suggest picking up one language(sth simple like Python), and then focussing on Data Structures and Algorithms(aka Leetcode). While learning things like docker, etc are helpful on the job, they are not a P0 requirement for clearing interviews at top companies. There are companies who do not ask such problem solving focussed questions, but I have not experienced such interviews yet. Your next challenge would be to line up interviews at a good tech company. Usual path would be to get your foot in the industry by joining a medium company, learning the basics for a year and then getting to a bigger/better company. (Unless you have a good network who work at the top tech companies)
I just want to emphasize that being good at software development, and clearing interviews at top firms are two very separate skillsets.

@modern-table-48211 Thanks for the roadmap and advise. I have started learning basic languages like HTML, CSS, C++, JavaScript. Slowly we'll start with python in a week. Understanding the learning curve and time, I'll try to get into Tech.
