It doesn't mention that you can't use existing open source projects - I can imagine building such a thing in openhab or home assistant UI.

Thanks folks for reaching out with your doubts & questions. The interview question/take-home assignment referred above in the screenshot is from old assignments (I would, say 2019 maybe). The current hiring process of balena doesn’t even include a take-home assignment. We have taken extensive feedback from past candidates and effectively have decided to move away from take-home projects (esp. projects that take hours to build). Rest assured, we definitely are not using any assignments to get "free work" done. Focusing on the current process, it includes 2 technical interviews. • 1x live coding exercise and • 1x system design exercise (In-depth technical discussion, not a test) Even when/if balena decides to use a take-home assignment as part of their process in the future. Balena always gives candidates an option to even choose if they want to have a live technical interview instead of the take-home assignment. The interviews are thoughtfully designed to assess the same skills fairly and objectively. We be happy to improve our interview process and look forward to more constructive thoughts from the community on the same, thanks!
