I just installed the HabitHub app for the "Don't break the chain" idea. Does your app have that? If yes, I will give that a try.

Could you elaborate on what that feature is? Is it simply like streaks?

I do have the concept of streaks. You can see a total streak and streaks by habit.
I am also planning to add a calendar-like view where you can see what days you did well and what days you didn’t.
Basically, along with the month by month history, something like a calendar view of the last 30 days.

don’t skip 2 days in a row is slightly better version of streaks

Interesting. So the idea behind this is that the app notifies you if you’re skipping?

You already have streaks. Just need to visually emphasize because the fear of breaking the chains is crucial for keeping motivation up.

Don’t skip 2 days in a row is a softer form of streaks. All it says is, you can skip 1 day sometimes and still build up your streak, do not skip 2 continuous days. People have busy days, bad days or just cheat days. Those should not crash the build up they’ve made. Duolingo does a version of this where it gives you gems for every lesson you complete etc and you can use these to freeze your streak for 1 day. i.e. if you’ve been good for a while, you can save your streak without feeling like a failure. Nuanced and imho better way of doing it.
You could do a variation where each day you miss deducts days from your streak 1, 2, 4 and so on…

Yeah, I’ve seen the duolingo thing and never used that option. I guess it differs from person to person.
But having that option definitely seems like a plus.

The eventual joy is, of course, that of having built the habit itself. But we are addicted to shorter reward cycles 🙂
Is the app open source?
