Way to go @modern-table-48211! Completing a book requires a different level of dedication and planning. Congratulations! 🙌
Curious. How much Royalty does Apress share? Or was it a get-paid-once kind of deal?
m
thanks Saurabh! Apress's royalty starts at 10% up to 20%, based on number of books sold. In addition, they give an upfront amount
so you can earn royalty assuming your book sales and earnings will cross the upfront that they provide.
there are other clauses for which you don't earn royalty - for example, with deep discounted sales, the author doesn't earn anything
my first edition sold in excess of a thousand copies. I consider that a big deal given not many like to buy books 🙂 my other book, thecdkbook.com - is a self publish that we are selling via Gumroad. Happy to talk in depth about the different perspectives in going independent vs via traditional publisher

Nice. Thanks for sharing. Many years ago, a friend and I were commissioned to write a book for Wiley on Game programming & architecture. It was for a Mumbai university course. They pay 10% divided between the authors. No upfront. Same clauses on discounted copies as you have. There was one more author from the University itself - so the royalties between the three of us - was not life changing. Also, I am unsure how many copies we sold till date (not much). It was an interesting experience and I think we spent more on coffee while meeting up to author the book than we ever made back. 🙂 But I can appreciate the effort it takes to get it published and we still had each other to get it done. So you doing it by yourself is even more admirable. Kudos! 🙌

Great work 🔥

@loud-glass-33663 Awesome to hear about that. I think it's universally known now that you will almost never make any money off the book from royalties, but it is a great feeling though 🙂 Thank you for the kudos! It was significantly easier with the second edition as it was mainly revisions and adding of a new chapter (what to include/exclude is another pain point itself). I gave a talk about my experiences with the first edition and what I did wrong back in 2020 https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1mTwiiXm0sXRRF2CxQRfdkbvKkDbgTcaeFKqHSPrmXsQ/edit?usp=sharing
