I guess the reason to stick with this (rightly so) is already Slack is a part of communication app for almost all. So wouldnt feel a diff to switch. If the switch to Discord happens, guess it needs people to get used to a new tool. 😞
r
Not sure if that reason is enough for losing valuable info in threads and conversations. Blockstack recently switched their 10k+ community from Slack to Discord because no way they are paying $50k+/m for hosting a community.
a
Right. There is an OS alternative Rocket Chat that could be used. Not sure why thats not popular enough 🤷‍♂️ Its much similar to Slack though
r
Using Rocket Chat for my work communications. The apps are buggy so not a fan of it. But yeah, it’s closest to Slack we get. Discord doesn’t have threads.
a
Slack is slow too. but we are so used to this kinda interface so maybe for an org that makes money, they can spend on this. but not for communities. 😞
r
Yeah. And I removed the “slow” line right after I posted my message. 😆 Rocket Chat is worth a try.

Discord doesn’t have threads
yes, I hate it that Discord doesnt have thread and I wonder why can’t they have it . There is no way to map a main thread than scrolling and reading through every message.
https://www.discourse.org For the sake of mention, Discourse is also an option, but it’s not chat based. Have been part of this design community only, with not very active participation. Also, it comes with starting costs a $100/month 10GB storage Unlimited members 5 staff users I think Abhishek has already been trying alternate solutions as well.

anyone gitter? 👀

I use Gitter for learnawesome.org

+1 for discourse, however its geared towards more structured conversations. And its free and open source and can be installed on your own servers so should be cheaper to run too

This one's a toughie 😐 I really feel sad that you guys lose out on the old conversations. I try my best by resurfacing the valuable info from the slack archive dump eg. https://slack.remoteindian.com/. Slack despite all its follies still feels like a keeper because there's no clear winner amongst the alternatives. That said I am happy to listen to arguments to change my mind.

I’m surpised that nobody has mentioned Mattermost. Uber uses Mattermost because Slack didn’t scale for them. Also, it’s Open Source 🙂 mattermost.com/customers/uber Also, no mention of Microsoft teams 🤔 They don’t have restrictions on volume/date based chats/search.

Ms teams only allows 300 users on the free plan.
Mattermost looks good. Similar to Rocketchat. And if Uber is using it, I would believe they have quality apps.
c
yes, Mattermost looks promising and pricing is also doable.
a
Matter most is good. I've checked their site but didn't do a check of their app. Anybody has used it for work communication?
Maybe a totally different thread. But any idea on how the licensing works? Like here matter most is os and what if after one year they change it. They aren't os anymore. So do the existing users self hosted their application have to pay or since they've been using it for long, do they continue 🤔
a
I’m not sure. But, I’m going to go ahead and say that if you fork it with a given license, only that license is applicable for that fork, forever. Otherwise, nobody would trust any Open Source 😅
a
Yes that seems about it but just want to know it surely enough
🙂
