Any tips for effectively switching context? Working on a side project and full-time job at the same time is hard.

Dont switch contexts. Build different contexts. Learn to be in ONE context at a time.
I split time between personal pet projects and work stuff. I have dedicated hours for this. Start with ONE hour for side project and then slowly increase it to about 2x-3x.
Never more than that though. Your day job requires 5-6 hours of undivided attention. You cannot fool around that since you get paid there! Earlier you learn to keep those contexts separate, better it is for both.

Follow 90-90-1 rule of robin sharma and combine with deep-work, shallow work of cal newport and schedule your ideal day
first 2-3 hours - side projects, then Client work and main business - all in DW and SW sessions

Thank you @straight-continent-34777 and @swift-pilot-25722. Though why side project first and then client work? I find I get sucked in if I do my own side project first so I get client work out of the way and then side projects.

1. Hard buffer or no buffer: Have a fixed buffer time that is easy to enforce like going to gym for one hour. No SM, movies etc., these are very hard to enforce while changing the context. If you don't have any hard buffer, just jump into other context. 2. Todoist Magic: Whenever I start doing some task, I divide that task into small tasks. This will help me ease into the new context. This is same when you are leaving a context also. Just write all the pending tasks so that you will be at peace and also helpful when you pickup later.

I’d flip the equation that @swift-pilot-25722 mentioned. Use side projects as a means to cool down. Dont use it as a means to warm up. That becomes costlier because your cognitive skills are more required and critical for the job that will pay you.

@straight-continent-34777 Thanks, I understand now. @able-train-80742 Good point. Do you keep the work in hard buffer?

What do you mean by work?

I focus on side projects more as I want those to Literally be my future vs Client work Passive income > Active income is my goals Currently, it's 95% active income, 5% passive - I want to flip this with new products, blogs and more income and asset generating means
hence I won't follow @straight-continent-34777’s methods since my goal is different, but if clients and other things are very important and you have less experience - they come first surely

@able-train-80742 work means “job” or client work you are doing.
@swift-pilot-25722 Makes sense. I am also more interested in passive income and creating assets, though maybe not that much as you. 😃

I was not clear earlier. Buffer time means the time between two important tasks. In your case, time between full time work and side project work. Hard buffer time means the tasks that have fixed time like gym and not addictive like social media, netflix etc.

Thanks. That makes it crystal clear. I just used a buffer to transition from client to own work. 😃

In my own experience, starting the day with side projects is better as your output is the maximum with whatever your input is. Over the course of the day, the output:input ratio falls and by the time you are done with your day job/client work, your mind has already consumed too much for the day. Needless to say, this might be different for different folks. Those who have a very chill day job might find it a lot easier to work later at night on projects that require focus. So I'd say try both but don't try switching context multiple times a day.
