Hey folks, had anyone taken up laptop insurance? Had a close call yesterday with my daughter’s laptop (lots of water spillage) and though hers is a very entry level one, I am thinking I should get one for myself. Any pointers/ feedback / etc?

I had a pretty good experience with Oneassist for their mobile protection plans. I broke an insured iPhone & they replaced it within a month.
l
Thanks @ancient-van-29120 I was looking at OneAssist as well.
Just tried to purchase a plan and it turns out your Laptop needs to be under 30 days old. Mine is now over 3 months old and not eligible. (The search continues)

@loud-glass-33663 The only plan that covers old electronics that I've seen is home insurance wherein they value the worth of all your "stuff". Airtel had insurance on the phone when I switched to postpaid with them but it was the same - phone had to be less than 3 months old, I think.

last year hdfc folks had called me asking me to buy electronics insurance at 9k/yr for 3 yrs includes all your electronics everything electronic at your home basically (needs purchase invoice)

Thanks @helpful-gigabyte-47939 @crooked-ghost-83128 You are right. The only option I see available is getting a home insurance. Speaking with HDFC-Ergo at present - for a content only insurance (inside home, etc). For a 10L policy, the premium is coming to ~ 7K / year. Will check out HDFC as well. And will update here with finally what I decided to go ahead with.

Yeah, it makes more sense to insure the contents of your entire home (ACs, machines, electronics) for 10L which probably covers burglary, rains, etc. than to buy a restrictive policy just covering old electronics, IMO.
l
Yeah @helpful-gigabyte-47939 That makes a lot more sense (provided the claim process makes sense) That ways you can end up covering multiple laptops, appliances, etc.
h
The main thing to check would be if they have a policy rider to reimburse "replacement cost" of the appliance and not just "depreciated costs". Such riders are available for vehicles.
l
Yeah. So HDFC-Ergo clearly states that it is non-depreciated costs. Which is good. But will check with others as well. 👍

Finally decided to go with HDFC Ergo - for home / laptop insurance just because they were transparent in their pricing. Any portable electronics are not included in the general home insurance and you need to get it as an addon. Also, portable electronics cannot be > 30% of your SI — which meant I HAD to take a 10L policy. Added all laptops at home which came to ~ 3L So base policy was ~ 5K and 5K addon cover comes to ~ 10K for 1 year. (I should get GST back I hope). So roughly 8.5K

Thanks for sharing, @loud-glass-33663

Does this cover burglary and weather incidents too? e.g. lightning, flooding, etc?
c
Amit, most insurance contracts do not cover "act of god" events like Flooding, Natural Disaster, Earthquake, Terrorism etc. Unless specifically mentioned on the policy.
l
I did add a “Terrorism” add-on because it was just 300 bucks or something. And the accidents to the laptops, etc. can happen within India. Need not be inside the premises (AFAIK)

That's good. I also saw that in HDFCs case, fire, natural calamities are covered. @loud-glass-33663 , does this also cover accidental spillage etc that was your primary concern?
l
@helpful-gigabyte-47939 This is what they sent me. Should answer your queries. Terrorism is an addon - 80 bucks extra. @crooked-activity-79384 - yes. It covers any accidental (non intentional) damages. They will evaluate whether they pay for repairs of invoice cost (0-depreciation). Also, there is a Rs. 5,000 excess on every claim - so basically you pay Rs. 5,000 / claim
h
@loud-glass-33663 looks to be a solid, non-weasely policy. The 5000 co-pay is a good filter (for Ergo) against trivial claims.
l
Yeah. Proof of the pudding is in the eating (claim settlement) though and I hope never to have to go through the process. 🤞
