I want to see if I can get some insights from people who use multiple monitors. I've been on only a laptop for years now, but possibly soon will settle down and set up a desktop environment. Has anyone tried/seen a setup with 2 4k monitors stacked on top of each other? Is it even feasible? Like with 2 32 inch monitors? Preliminary research suggests that it's hard to even find a dual-monitor arm that supports 2 stacked 32-inchers. Am I also drastically underestimating the hugeness of 32 inchers on a desk? Ideal distance away from eyes? I should prolly check such monitors in a showroom, but I've been stuck in a remote city for months.
More context: I have some notions of a possible setup, but have no idea on how it will turn out in practice. I imagine a setup with 3 monitors - 2 4k monitors stacked on top of each other (preferably 32 inches), and 1 (2k/4k) monitor on the side in portrait. It is sorta intended to follow from my laptop workflow where I always (and only) have 3 major windows - a terminal with my 'IDE' with 3 splits (up from 2 on laptop), a terminal with 3 or 4 splits of my notes (up from 2 at a time on laptop), and one browser window. I have some auxiliary shells, but they fine to stay in secondary tmux-windows of the main viewports mentioned above The terminal windows would go on the stacked monitors, and the browser would go on the side-monitor. Perhaps the browser can use half of the monitor, leaving space for an auxiliary terminal on the lower half. The triple splits per screen are important to me.

Sounds like overkill to me and I’ve been working with external (and multiple) monitors for years now. My recommendation to you would be to ignore all the fancy stuff you see out there and figure out what works best for you. I would start by getting one monitor and seeing how that goes and then stepping things up if it doesn’t feel like it is good enough.

Yeah, one by one is likely how I'll procure them. I'm fairly certain I'm going to have 3 monitors - I'm very comfortable with my workflow which I've been using for years now, but hate switching between the 3 screens all the time. Now just need to establish how to organize the monitors and the combo of resolutions.

Here's my two cents. First of all, check if your laptop can support two external monitors, it eats through your GPU and also you need to have two ports for display. Most laptops only have 1 output. I have 27inch monitors, currently only using 1, and it's quite huge but usable. I was on a laptop to monitor setup but in a week I'm building my own desktop so let's see how that goes.

I have a 27" 4k monitor, which I use in vertical. I was planning to buy another one of the same model to complete my set up. I in fact purchased the second one, but got cancelled in shipment, when lockdown started. About the support - if you are using laptop, make sure you have H series processor, not U, a graphics card (important part) which support 2 4k monitors. As a thumb rule, H series will most likely support it. About the size, I feel 27" to be the perfect fit for me. it is a personal choice. Also, as you may know, physical size of the monitor doesn’t matter, the resolution is what decides whether it will be supported or not. About my setup: I use terminal with tmux as 3/4 on my vertical monitor. remaining will be for misc things. Laptop monitor for browsers and other windows. Problem with combining a large single monitor and the laptop screen: Because of the size of the monitor, text in your laptop screen might be too small comparing to the monitor. Either you have to move laptop closer than the monitor or scale up the laptop display text size. This is is major reason why I was looking for a second display of the same size - this way, I can keep the laptop display off.

Apologies for my interference, almost in same scenario here. I entered to a phase of life where the need of a secondary display became mandatory. Currently i have to open 3-4 windows in one laptop and tired by swiping the mouse pad, haha. My budget fits this monitor found in Amazon. I'm not sure if this will rightly fit into my retina MBP 2013 model that has Dual Graphics and 500GB SSD. Anyone here can confirm that? I'm bit worried of performance loss.

Thanks for your inputs guys. I'm still wondering on the feasibility of large stacked monitors - will likely need a wall mount for one of them. Then will still have to see if it's practical enough to use without much neck movements. I'll likely start with laptop + 1 monitor and go from there, which is what you guys are talking about. (Eventually to a full desktop build)
@creamy-dawn-73235 Damn man - is that 1080p at 27"? Would 1440p not be a sweet-spot resolution for a 27" screen? Of course, it's all personal preference, but just wondering. I imagine everything is gonna look massive in this setup (but maybe that's what you're going for)

Revisiting this thread again. I haven't brought any yet. But this one from Monoprice has got impressive reviews and looks like a great deal overall compared to big brands like Dell/LG and perfectly fits Macbook Pro. Got to know from this Twitter Thread. They offer shipping to India, still after $200 DHL shipping, this doesn't cost anything near to Dell 27 4K.
s
^ That looks interesting. Wouldn't customs charges on top of the shipping kill the deal in a big way? I'm personally looking at the BenQ PD3200U, though it's pricey at 58k. From what I've seen 32 inches is a good size for 4k. Since 4k can make text look tiny on 27 inches, and you'd maybe end up resorting to scaling things up, which would be unfortunate IMO.
c
Since it's a DHL fulfilled shipping, no worries regarding that. But still something worries me😅. nothing is safer than getting one natively. Screen sizes would be a personal opinion. 32in is a good take but would be too big for me. :)
s
Huh. That $200 includes customs clearance? Or DHL will just handle clearing but they'll ask you to pay the the additional customs charges? If former, that's a pretty good deal. Desi babus at customs scare me tho. If you do take the plunge, please do report back. I'm very curious.
c
No, that's all one need to pay. in the past i have brought items through DHL and they handle all the clearance.

Few more questions about buying a monitor: I am looking to buy dell P2419H ( No fancy 4k for now 🙂 I think a 24-inch 1080p would be "sufficient" for me; current setup:1080p 13-inch laptop with 150% scaling). Couple of questions: 1) If you had upgraded from a 1080p 24-inch setup to a 27-inch 1440p - Does the increase in convenience/productivity justify the ~60% price difference? I will happily spend 15K on the 24-inch dell, but I am thinking about future proofing, and sunk cost in case I don't like it and want to upgrade to 27-inch soon. I know the best way is to just head out to the shops - but corona; and many shops I had called are out of stock seemingly due to supply problems. 2) I see BENQ or other 1440p/QHD 27-inch monitors around 25k INR, but dell's 1440p models are much costlier. Is there a reason for this? I see many recommendations here are for dell P series.

Do consider that P2419H allows rotating the display which other displays wont

I am tagging along for a ride as well. 😄 Considering the idea of buying one myself. But even 24 inches seems to big for me. If I am not far away from the screen (table isn't that deep), does it make sense to get a big screen. Won't the eyes get tired because they'd move more on a bigger screen? I have almost never used a secondary monitor. Appreciate inputs from people who have used one for a while. 🙏🏽

IMO a bigger screen is easier on the eyes. I got my 2 32-inchers and after a few years on only laptop, feels great.

I have had mixed opinions throughout this topic 😇 and it looks like this Monitor suits me well. I would prefer couple of monitors than single big screen. The reviews under that product are really helpful
