I am kind of sick of living in a big city. Looking for a location to move to after the pandemic is over. Do any of you live in a small city, town, or village that fits the basic requirement for remote work? 1. Good internet connectivity 2. Decent medium-term (few months) accommodation options (rented house with basic amenities) 3. Some natural green spaces for leisure/walks/hikes (natural water bodies to swim in would be a big plus!) Some potential places I am thinking about: 1. Jodhpur (too hot?) 2. Mysore 3. Gokarna 4. Kovalam, Tamil Nadu 5. Auroville. 6. Vashisht, Old Manali 7. Chhattru (no internet) 8. Achalu, Ramanagar. 9. Hampi. 10. Kaza. 11. Less popular parts of Goa? 12. Landour 13. Rishikesh 14. Bhilai! (How could I forget this one. I was born and brought up here!) But these are still quite touristy. The lesser-known the place, the better. I would love to know about your personal experiences and ideas.

Why not places in Kerala?

Gangtok, Sikkim šŸ˜€. Capital City. Sure has good internet, cheap housing (8-10k pm for 2 BHK). Very green lush ( Its at the footsteps of Himalayas) A lot of water falls, but may not have a very accessible waterbody big enough for swimming.
Ponda / Fonda in God. 28kms from Panjim. Less crowded when compared to other places.
Many more like Ratnagiri in Konkan

I am interested too. i am planning to move to my native in TN after corona issue is over.

Few remote parts of Nilgiris that's fairly away from touristy city. They used to have ony BSNL broadband, now people say airtel is avaiable.

I have spent my summers in Rakkar, a village near Dharamshala for the last 4 years and found a lot of joy. Couldn't go this year because of obvious reasons šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø but looking at settling down there in the future. I am keenly looking at Kerala too. I like the vibe and good infrastructure there. Wrote a twitter thread sometime back which might resonate with you šŸ‘‰ https://www.evernote.com/l/AMHpsSn2LwBF8pGC3sz1ROai5x_5-RolG3A

We have so many threads on this topic now :) is someone in BLR right now? I would love to figure out logistics and how-to with anyone who is seriously considering doing this. 1. Which location to choose 2. How to get there 3. How to rent a place there and find stable internet etc
We can do a separate channel / ama / video call
c
@numerous-zoo-23860 I am in BLR. Not sure if I wish to do move places in the near future due to the pandemic. But would certainly be interested in evaluating the options. A new channel makes a lot of sense. @calm-grass-85557?
@creamy-dawn-73235 Why not! Any specific places you would recommend?
@brash-monitor-80970 definitely a great candidate. A junior from college actually runs an NGO there. Pritam Pany of Voyage Zero Waste. https://www.linkedin.com/company/voyage-zerowaste/

@curved-minister-23111 @numerous-zoo-23860 Can we use #nomad channel for further discussion? We can rename it to something more suitable.
Also how about starting a spreadsheet where we can record data. Like a NomadList but for places in India.

I lived in Mysore for 8 years before moving to Bangalore. It fits your criteria.

For folks who are very serious about moving away from cities, you should talk to @acceptable-flag-71699. https://twitter.com/nileshtrivedi/status/1270976024189140994

I'm inclined to be somewhere in the western ghats. Mountains are romantic but infra like accessibility, healthcare, connectivity would become real concern for long-term living.

I'm from Mysore and I totally love it!
Great internet, slow vibe, good health care and very clean. People are very nice even though I say so myself..
c
I am sorta biased in favour of Karnataka. Reasons: 1. I know basic Kanadda (people have complimented me on knowing it as a person with Hindi as mother tongue.) 2. I like the food 3. Weather If I move to a place I would love to know the local language. Planning to start learning Tamil.
Anyone here lived in the northeast?
s
Wow. Mysore is popular. I'm also planning to move and set up base there. Only visited once tho so donno details about it.
s
Mysore is a good option. maybe i can explore there as well..

I’m currently stationed at Khopoli, right in between Mumbai and Pune at the base of Western Ghats. Small and beautiful town. Excellent connectivity with both Pune and Mumbai. Internet is good enough considering such a small town. Power is decent(I got inverter installed so no issues). And you frequently get to enjoy natural beauty as well.

Great man
c
Panvel / khandala / Lonavala / dehu road (suburban area near Pune) Have good connectivity to Mumbai / Pune airports No city chaos , greenery and good infra
Dams/ small streams available for swimming lots of small isolated /hiking places for trips
g
Remove Kaza from your list. Internet is non-existent, except for limited 2G/3G connectivity on BSNL connections on state network only. Even a BSNL SIM from another state won't work there.

@curved-minister-23111 šŸ‘‹. Being someone who grew up in Tripura and lived for 16 years, I can say that electricity and internet services are very good now (probably more power uptime than Bangalore). Cost of living is very low, 10-20k per month for rent+groceries+utilities depending on how much you want to splurge. You could easily rent a decent 2BHK in a good locality at 5-10k per month. Coming to the cons: • Lack of quality healthcare - only 1 big govt and 1 big private hospital, lots of private practitioners though • Limited connectivity options - air travel is the only time and cost viable option I lived in Roorkee (near Rishikesh) during my college days. The Roorkee-Haridwar-Rishikesh belt can get a little bit crowded and touristy depending on how you think about it.

c
@gorgeous-tent-29765 I studied in Roorkee too! šŸ‘‹šŸ½ Rishikesh is on the list (I would probably look for accommodation in the jhoola area). Haridwar seems pretty crowded to me. When you said Tripura, did you mean Agartala? Or are you saying that other places in Tripura have amenities at par with Agartala? I would definitely want to explore more options in the northeast.

Panvel / khandala / Lonavala / dehu road
Wouldn't these be crowded during the tourist season?
s
@curved-minister-23111 , if you're planning to visit kovalam or auroville.. let me know. it's nearby.
g
@curved-minister-23111 Ah. Nice. šŸ™‚ I found the jhoola area crowded too. But, again it depends on personal preferences. Yes. I was describing the situation in Agartala. Other places in Tripura are not suited for IT and related professions. Although, there are good places to go around and stay temporarily.
c
@gorgeous-tent-29765 Ah, Jhoola area. it's been about 7 years since I went to Rishikesh. So I guess things have changed. But when I say Jhoola area, I don't mean the options near the busy cafes, but a little away from the crowd. Not sure if that will be considered the Jhoola area though. :)
s
@curved-minister-23111 - Give a thought to Silvassa .. its green, infra is good including internet, good schools for kids, 3bhk costs hardly 10-15k , lovely hospitable people around, beach is not far, airpot is about 100km .. major railway station is nearby. mumbai, pune and gujarat are not too far as well.

Kerala might be a good fit. Really good health care facilities toppled with greenery and fresh air. people are really laid out.
c
@quaint-pilot-26370 Any specific locations in Kerala you would recommend?
f
Trivandrum is probably worth a look. Not a metro city but good rail/air connectivity. Near to beaches and some hill stations in reasonable distance.

I got in touch with a friend who's been running a company from Manali (4play.in). He shared this today. šŸ˜„ It's a sheet which has information about cost of living in Manali. https://forms.gle/t4vkWDqfavkyTNet6
