Lately, I've gotten more and more curious about the topic of certifications. Anyone here has gotten any professional certifications done? AWS, Azure, CKAD, etc or other relevant certifications in your domain? What were your motivations? Did you employer/client mandate it? Or some other reason (self-learning, career boost, just needed the badge/certificate etc)?

Some folks I know have got the AWS solutions architect certification & they say it’s quite a good test for your backend/cloud skills. I have a scrum certification, from a previous employer. Haven’t found any of these useful in getting a job!

The major motivator is AWS partner networks requiring specific number employees with AWS Adv Certifications So, employers mandate the certifications for their teams and also recruitments happen for those specific purposes

I’ve personally found certifications to be vapor ware. It’s a rarity that someone with a certification is actually hireable.

Having done my fair share of interviews for devops positions - it’s been a more often than not case of candidates with certifications not being up to the mark.

@ancient-van-29120, @crooked-ghost-83128: Thanks. Were your certifications sponsored by employers or did you have to do it in personal capacity?
@straight-continent-34777: True, but to get contracts in regulated industries or with governments, certifications are needed. Not really for knowledge but a legal cover-your-ass thing.

I’ve had this thought as well.
And honestly I really do not have an answer.

I have an AWS Solutions Architect Associate. I took it because I could not get hands on a few services that were worth exploring. I use certification as a tool that would help me explore a few services in a bit of structured context.
Also in AWS Context, there are a few concepts that advance certifications help to understand. Again its a personal thing and everyone’s milage may vary.
One of the reasons the certifications are getting bad rap is because of a few people just mugging up things and using dumps. They don’t do enough hands on experience and expect that if they have certs an employer should hand them jobs. To be honest, structurally most certs do serve as a good path / guideline to get accustomed to the tech.
