A request to everyone, for each channel: Can we add responses to a topic by creating a thread, in stead of responding to the topic in the main channel? This way, if somebody isn't keen on participating in a topic, they will not get notifications triggered by responses to that topic. Currently, every new message, whether it is a brand new topic, or a response to a topic, triggers a notification. This is a general best practice for Slack and it helps keep distractions to a minimum.

Reducing distractions or organizing by threads is a welcome idea but I don't know how practical it is. We might lose older threads since all are not paid slack subscribers. Also regarding "general best practice for Slack" - isn't slack supposed to be real-time like a replacement for an actual lively group chat?

1. If you're worried about losing older threads, responding directly in the channel will only expedite losing older threads since responses may be treated as separate threads too. 2. Slack can be real-time and can have a lively group chat under threads too. 3. Moreover, if people start getting irrelevant notifications (responses to threads they are not interested in) more than relevant notifications (new threads that they may be interested in), it deteriorates the signal to noise ratio. Over time, people will lose interest and they will drop out, and then everybody loses.
