@better-telephone-38720 "Return to the country of employment", not return to office. Seems like sensationalised headlines to me.
I can understand that request legally, since it potentially puts them at risk of being investigated by various countries' tax offices since the employee is no longer paying tax in that country.
e.g. US employee moved to Thailand for the next year will claim to US Tax authorities that he's not working in US and will pay tax to Thailand instead. If too many people do that, US taxman investigates Google.
I suspect this is just an announcement to show everyone "We did our part, we can't physically force the employees back into the country"
