Hi guys, I was working in startup before but now currently working with MNC. So here they have 1-1 with manager every month. So just wanted to know what all things do you discuss with your manager in 1-1? I am new to this system so not ssure what is correct or right approach for having such conversations?
c
Growth, how are you liking, any problems, general chit chat, what do you think product should have? I had 1-1 with CEO every month, that's what we talked about

One of the most important things you can do in these 1-1s is to build a feedback loop for your performance and career growth. For example, Projects - What did you do, how well did you do, what did you do well. What mistakes did you make, how do you not repeat them, etc. Skills and traits - What skills and practices do your company/team value. Which of them you need to level up on, what does that look like, what specific things should you do to level up. Which of them you're doing a good job on, how can you leverage this more in your position. Career growth - What is the next level in your career, what are the responsibilities that come with it? How can you start being responsible for those things right now. You need to work according to the job that you want. Team/company - How can you help your team become better? What are the things your manager is trying to focus on and how can you help? What recent developments should affect how you work? There will be more things based on your role, your company, your manager that you can talk about. Remember to take notes and do a retrospective in the next 1-1.

Me & my manager have a shared notion doc that we update right before the 1:1. Apart from what @tall-advantage-5586 has already covered, it consists of actionable items like weekly metrics, ship list items if any, communication within the design team and outside of it. It's also a safe space to discuss anything personal that might be affecting your performance at your job. This helps the manager then know what you're upto and then we work on next steps and how to resolve issues, etc.

Thanks a lot everyone for your answers 😀

The important thing is this: for your 1:1, you own the agenda.

Most 1:1 is about what u did, what u did not and what is expected from u - very rarely the Manager is going to ask you what u want to do
