Which VPN do you folks use? How much do you pay for it? Does it work reliably on both mobile & desktop? Any issues/gotchas you've experienced?
r
I use protonVPN. It works well in all platforms. I use their free tier which includes Japan, Netherlands and US servers.
e
I use PIA (Private Internet Access) VPN and it is pretty amazing, I would definitely recommend it. More details about it can be found here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ If I remember correctly, I have a two year plan.

Mullvad is my goto, besides, I also have an Oracle Cloud instance with Wireguard installed

express vpn, 9 usd per mo but very good

NordVPN, I got a 3y plan for quite cheap at the time. Right now they are having a 2y plan for $89 which I think you can bring down with some coupons. It works well and reliably - though I don’t use it for streaming - so no experience there.

Didn't they face a major data hack?
c
https://mullvad.net/ is good option. Moreover, Mozilla has also rolled out their VPN services on top of Mullvad & also cheaper - https://vpn.mozilla.org/

For anyone comparing different services, be sure that the one you opt for is using Wireguard (a newer VPN protocol) as it is significantly faster in general compared to traditional OpenVPN.

I use WireGuard installed on a Digital Ocean droplet. It costs me about 5$ a month, but I use this droplet for a lot more things other than running WireGuard itself. The main gotcha is this required a lot of Linux admin knowledge to ensure the right security setup. It's better to use a hosted VPN solution which supports WireGuard.

Thanks everyone., great suggestions 👍 For now, I ended up using CloudFlare's 1.1.1.1. Really simple to set up & works across all my devices. Has some drawbacks (e.g. I can't choose endpoint server location etc), but will do for now. Will explore the other options a bit later down the line.

NordVPN, long-time user.

It depends on what you need a VPN for. Anonymity or being in another country to test some stuff out. For me, it is the latter (you can pick country / server / etc) which is helpful in a lot of situation. For
real
anonymity, you need to be looking at a VPN + VPN + Tor kind of setup. There is no way to be sure that these commercial VPN services are actually “not logging your activity” as they claim they do 🤷

NordVPN provides double VPN and Tor options as well. @loud-glass-33663

Fair point @loud-glass-33663. For now, my needs are simple (bypass geo-restrictions for some websites, am not streaming anything) and met by CloudFlare. But yes, I'll need Express | Nord | Mullvad etc for more serious stuff.
c
I impulsively bought 6-months of Surfshark after looking at some random reddit review, was skeptical but it works great. (Although if you want to cancel you have to contact their support & tell reasons which is tedious)
e
Nord VPN is on an offer for 2 years if people have not noticed
a
using mullvad for more than 4 years now. it is slightly costly compared to others in the market. but definitely worth paying for. I tried to move to couple of other cheaper options and they were really slow compared to mullvad. Also, if you consider privacy, this is one of the best service you can get. here is a detailed comparison of vpn providers from security stand point - https://www.safetydetectives.com/best-vpns/#simple-vpn-comparison
c
Windscribe, using just the free version for quite a few years now.
