Hi Everyone! I needed some recommendations regarding the home setup for my work. I have a budget of a few thousand dollars and I am very confused as to what setup to proceed with. My current setup: One 24 inch LG IPS panel monitor and a custom build AMD RYZEN 5 custom CPU with SSD and 16 GB RAM. What I am planning for is: 1. MacBook pro 16 inches with M2/M1X chip (hopefully this WWDC it will be released) and one iPad Air or iPad Pro which I would use as a sidecar. I want to use iPad as a sidecar as it will be very portable and I can get an extra screen anywhere as I cannot carry around a monitor. 2. Option 2 is instead of an iPad as a sidecar I buy a ultra-wide monitor. But I guess it will be difficult if I travel. What would your suggestions be? Are there more important things I should consider on the setup? Anything you all would recommend? Did anyone use a sit-stand desk? How about that?

A larger monitor is much better than an iPad screen paired with laptop. You can add iPad some time in future if not now.

Yeah that definitely makes sense.

What's the use case for a MBP? My MBP from work is gathering dust as I very much prefer my desktop setup. I'd recommend a decent 27" screen over an iPad or MBP, but that's my personal preference. If you dont have a decent mesh chair, i'd recommend looking into getting that along with a footrest - these have made it much easier for me to work.

So I need MBP for macOS and mainly for portability. Like I can work on it on my chair and then later take it to the sofa and watch movies. Also, my entire team is mostly on Mac and I am the only windows user. So it causes some friction as most people are accustomed to getting things done in mac/Linux way and for windows way, I need to do my own research.
And yes about the extra screen that definitely makes more sense to get a dedicated 27 inch
Oh and for chair, I already have a very good office char at home
And yes I do not want to dual boot and I need windows as I use a few windows specific apps

Have you tried WSL2? I don't use it as much but a lot of people have told me they dropped dual-booting and now use Windows with WSL2 for linux
f
WSL2 is game changer! It basically is running Linux Kernel that boots in less than a second, and VS Code Remote WSL2 extension works pretty great.

As you already have a 24 inch monitor You can go for 2nd 24 inch monitor for dual monitor setup instead of ultrawide I would say go for an iPad/surface pro if your work include drawing and if you prefer taking notes digitally

Thanks @faint-energy-11966 and @flat-morning-91037 for suggesting WSL2. haven't tried it yet but will surely check it out
@salmon-processor-35222 yes a dual monitor setup can also be a good idea.
