Anyone here has successfully migrated their Whatsapp data from Android to iOS? I’m planning to make a switch soon and this would be an important step for me.
f
There are third-party apps to do it and I wouldn’t trust any of those. Whatsapp is rumoured to add this functionality built-in but rumours are rumours. 😬

There are paid third party apps which claim to do the job, but actually I've not seen a single one work properly. The most you can do to safeguard your chats is to transfer them to Telegram. For most part, you need to start fresh with WhatsApp while migrating to iOS.

I've used Dr. Fone, a paid software, to do the migration and it worked well for me. The only issue I've noticed was that search functionality did not work for the migrated chats. The workaround for that would be to take a backup of the chat on your iphone and restore the data again.

There is no official way to do this. I researched a lot. There are third-party ways but I would not risk my message history with some random code.

Any idea how these apps are able to do this on a "Secure" platform like iOS where everything is locked down and apps don't even have file system access?
g
@glamorous-mouse-696 -- all those apps require developer mode access on both platforms. Root privileges in short.

Wait. WhatsApp allows backing up chat data to google drive on android. You cannot restore that data on iOS?
w
@damp-memory-53739 @gorgeous-tent-29765 these apps don’t need root privileges, they just use your backup data which is not secured.

@faint-energy-11966 I have the same question. I think google backup should work right?
w
@faint-energy-11966 Nope. You can’t, that’s the unfortunate truth about switch platforms.
Sounds like I will need to keep my old phone laying around if in case I need old Whatsapp data before I can sell it off.
g
There are tools with which you can open old backups. You'll need a private key to open the backups, which you can get with root on android.
I'm not sure if you can use the old phone after you activate whatsapp in the new phone.
w
Good point. I will need to checkout some tools to read from backup

The most annoying thing i had come across lol. i couldn’t find a tutorial/blog post that explained this process neatly

Isn't the Export Chat functionality a plain txt format? If you just need a backup of your chats on any device I guess the export chat function can be used. Or the best option would be to wait for this - https://wabetainfo.com/whatsapp-to-allow-chat-history-migration-between-ios-and-android/ Chat migration released on beta - https://wabetainfo.com/whatsapp-beta-for-android-2-21-9-7-whats-new/

@salmon-processor-35222 I seriously doubt Whatsapp will clone my data to additional devices once this feature launches. I think when you add a new device Whatsapp will consider that as a starting point of it.
