I have a sudden surge of recruiters reaching out to me on LinkedIn. And all of these are in-office roles. Never had so many recruiters flooding my inbox. I wonder if people who've now got a taste for remote work are quitting en-masse as the lockdown restrictions are being lifted and post-vaccination companies are asking employees to come back to office.
m
Idea what caused the sudden surge?
f
Companies asking employees to return back to office, employees quitting, so they are looking for new people? That's what I am speculating. I could be wrong though Its funny they are reaching out to me in herds now when I've removed 50% of references related to development work as I am trying to switch to Product.

My wife’s employer has been looking for recruiting for months now, wife takes several interviews each week, and they’re asked to insist candidates for in-office (if not now but by end of the year). And that’s the case with my previous employer too.

Lockdown has massively accelerated stuff that can be digitized; lots of new business verticals and opportunities have been created, so they're probably feeling manpower crunch. Moreover 100% remote work means existing people get higher chances of switching to other companies which were not accepting remote roles. So lot of people exiting, even if temporary remote for few months until the pandemic ends (if it does, at all. Seems like a never ending thing now 😅).

I feel in cities like Pune, Bangalore, Hyd and Delhi, there’s this ecosystem of commercial real estate surrounded by overpriced residences where both work hand-in-hand to lure people, and Covid just toppled that model which is rattling the sellers.

If we actually manage to have a significant chunk of Indian tech people working remotely, that would completely change the game. Reverse migration to rural regions, lower pollution, lower traffic, Real estate will come crashing down.

My friends who get lowballed with 7-8 lpa offers in Mumbai are being offered 12lpa for similar roles in Bangalore (both in-office and remote)

The true Punekars often hate IT folks for the inflated prices of real estate. The prices got inflated to such levels that only IT people could afford it with their fat salaries, leaving out the folks in other industries behind. This was some 5-10 years back. @faint-energy-11966 as for the package part - A friend of mine landed a job in Orissa (remote until pandemic ends) for about 300% jump in pay. Companies are willing to pay perhaps because they can cut down on real estate investments.

I’m not “true Punekar” but I 💯 agree on it, Pune has lost much of its green cover due to crazy constructions of overpriced residences just due to ton of people pouring here to work in IT jobs every year. And that’s the case for literally any city to see around the world where IT is dominant service sector. Not much one can do, it is just capitalism. 🤷‍♂️

Some people in San Francisco hate their major because she hates capitalism or how she is moving towards the opposite direction

On the opposite side, tech workers are among the highest tax payers in the service sector so it aids to overall standard of living of a community. A person who can afford would hire multiple people for house help and that leads to employment opportunities which wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Not to mention that start-ups like Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo and ride-hailing services have succeeded only due to people living in metros and tier-2 cities who were willing to throw money at trivial problems like those.

Sadly, Corona has made many stop househelp, and people switched to machines - like robo vacuums, dishwashers, etc. In Pune dishwashers went out of stock for months when 1st unlock happened last year and were available only on advance order with a waiting period of about 2 months at every distributor!

People who switched to remote and now being chased by recruiters on linkedin be like

Do you guys think if company tries to give employees full remote or hybrid model option (3or 4 day work from office per week) then will the salaries decrease? Some companies are using remote or hybrid model as a perk. Hence many candidates salary is lowballed

I have decided to resign if my company doesn’t allow me permanent work from home, post pandemic; because a) parents turned to senior citizens, so wanted stay with them b) don’t want to go back to heavy traffic, heavy emi culture and heavy pollution culture.
