Hey Folks, I just moved to Bangalore and was welcomed to the world of powercuts. While the society I live in has backup the switchover takes a few seconds and I end up losing network connectivity. I'm looking for backup for my wifi routers and wanted to check if regular UPS supports micro loads? I need to power the regular airtel modem/router and a main wifi router I use in the same room (Range extender doesn't work well with the airtel wifi router, hence the need for another primary router), hence the UPS route and not the smaller router UPS options. I'd have to otherwise purchase 2 of them and a single UPS with 3 power outlets would be cheaper than buying 2 router mini UPS. Any suggestions for UPS as well?

I use a UPS with 3 outlets in my office (one for PC, one for monitor, one spare/unused).. No issues so far with the UPS itself. However you have to get the battery replaced approx once a year. I purchased the cheapest UPS available on amazon. I only need it for the 5 - 10 seconds it takes for my office power to switchover to secondary during an outage. https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00H1P0CD2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I think I paid some RS 1800 for it (about 2 years ago).

Looks like that one is unavailable now. From what I've heard these type UPS don't usually support micro loads and hence fail to power wifi routers. Wanted to check if they would be suitable for routers too

APC ones work well for routers, however you should disable the “Battery care” option on them.

@late-autumn-84503: Unfortunately, I don't know. The office (coworking space) manages the WIFI (including switch over to a backup wifi).

Curious, how long do the regular PC UPS (not router UPS) last (in terms of backup and durability both)? I had one about 4-5 years back for my desktop which used to last hardly 15minutes and was dead within 6 months. Even replaced batteries from local shop same result. Has the PC UPS tech improved in recent years? Asking because I have a router UPS which lasts 4 hours and is running happily since almost 2 years now.

Check out https://www.amazon.in/stores/RESONATE/page/BD7C8159-5B91-4192-9D44-3267FFEBEDB4?ref_=ast_bln Resonate. They’re specifically made for routers and should fit perfectly for you since your requirement is only of a few seconds.

(but may not fit just right if you have more than one router)
Speaking of regular UPS-es: In my experience they do work for micro loads. Many times there’s a power loss and only my modems and routers are on and the switch happens as it normally does. Best to check once before buying but most should work IMO.

They sell splitter cable that can power 2 devices but the overall output is 2A which may not be sufficient for 2 routers.

https://amzn.to/3mPr0Cs You can consider buying APC UPS.

I have two resonate ones, one with 12V 3A output and one with 12V 2A output. The 3A one was bought to power my JioFibre modem which wasn't working with the 2A one. I suggest buying two if you have both modem and a separate router. The router UPS connected to my modem gives me a back up of around 4-5 hours.

Thanks folks for all the help and suggestions. The splitter would unfortunately not work since the total would be 2.5A. I will have to research if there are other splitters available. Will have to probably stick to a UPS for now since buying one regular 300W UPS would work out cheaper than buying 2 separate router UPS

But keep in mind that regular ups are designed for heavy load for a short time so have bad efficiency. I have a 1100va apc ups and with the router it only lasts 2 hours even though on paper for its vattery size it can last several hours.
